I obtained a FIR sauna 4 months ago and have had the same experience...can't find much info, but people say they are the thing to have for detox.
I myself have found that I occasionally have an increase in symptoms after doing one. Believe they were worse when I first started doing them.
I even went to the libraries. Not much to be found.
Among other things, I like the idea of using the largest organ of our bodies, the skin to detox. My liver is taxed enough.
I did a google search for sauna. Got a little info, not much.
Hope you find something.

Why is the FIR sauna preferred over the traditional sauna?
I can go to my health club and take a traditional sauna. but everyone here seems to recommend the FIR. Why?

FIR penetrates deeper into the tissues. I got mine from www.saunapeddler.com. They offer $50 off the listed prices also. I mention that on my site. Be well.

Doesn't anyone out there have any guidelines that they could share?
I just don't want to do anything too fast for my body and I am having an awful time.
Any help would be appreciated.

Kentucky Girl,
FIR Sauna penetrates deeper into tissues, about 1.5 inches, than steam sauna.
Saunas are a serious method of detox and cannot be used by anyone. Patients with suppressed adrenals, Lupus, MS should talk to their doctor before using.
Even though most ads they they detoxify heavy metals, do not believe it. They should only be used late in the detox if mercury or metals play a role - which they do for most people.
The heat of a sauna does not kill spirochetes.
We have used one for a long time, but we did not use it until late in our treatment for Lyme and heavy metal detox. We did not want to end up with more metals in the brain than were already there. I am saying it as it is.
At that point it is a wonderful way to detox the daily accumulation of toxins and everything else a sauna does that they manufacturers write about.
Go here http://www.hightechhealth.com/html/sauna_benefits.htm and have them send you all the literature and publications. You can also go and do a search on the internet "Far infrared sauna vs. steam sauna" and you can check it out more.
I love our FIR, but I am no longer concerned with Lyme and metals.
Take care.

I have an infra-red sauna..My lyme dr.says it doesnt have to get real hot because it does penetrate a couple of inches into the skin. I get mine up to 90 to 100 degrees. DR told me to only go in for 5 to 8 min daily rotating position every 2 min or so. Afterwards, brush the body completely with a loofa brush,no soap..then a cool shower again no soap. There are many many benefits from this in addition to de-tox chemicals and heavy metals. My dr gave me some general info ,but the rest I got off the web from a book called Sauna Therapy. I hope this info helps those of you who are curious about this. Good luck. I and a neighbor built mine..it's in the garage..works quite well.

There is a type of protocol for sauna used for detox:
1. Mild exercise before when enters to start sweating. (I bike)
2. Do skin brushing, using upward strokes toward the heart
3. Once in sauna, make sure you are drinking water, but you should be replenishing minerals. I make sure I am taking them on that day.
4. Wash the whole body after sauna with soap and then end with cool water.
5. You may feel tired afterwards, and the sauna does drive the antibiotics deeper into the system, so you may herx. Rest.
I do sauna two to three times a week.
6. For further detox, after the sauna, one can have a massage.

Hi Dani, we have just bought a book called "Detox or Die " by Dr Sherry Rogers and it loks like a very informative book on detox and specifically FIR sauna and the protocols for using it and supplements to take etc as the sweating can really deplete you of minerals especially it says magnesium. Good luck with your FIR. BW, Genevieve

My LLMD suggested slowly working up to 20 minutes at 120 degrees every other day at a maximum.
He also recommended exercising beforehand (he's an anaerobic exercise proponent) to heat the body from the inside out.
I try to drink a full bottle of Gerolsteiner mineral water (for its high mineral content) during the sauna and while I shower. That's in addition to my other mineral supplements.

Oops! I goofed. My doc said 20 minutes and 110 degrees - not 120 degrees. My Lyme brain kicked in!
I overdid it by doing more than that and got really depleted and created a plateau so go easy. I'm doing much better now and still using the sauna 3 times per week at the suggested temp and for the suggested time and frequency.
Cheers, D

Still not sure exctly why a IFR suana would be better than a hot bath.
Mosit heat/ie: hot water penetrates the body very well if I submerse my whole body in it.
And a hot bath can raise my temp really high and produce sweating.
I want to order one but am still waffling regaurding the same effcets I think can come from a 20 minuet hot bath.
Confused

My understanding is that the FIR Sauna heats more deeply than any other method including exercise. Somewhere I read that more toxins came out in the sweat after FIR Sauna than exercise.
Also, one of my LLMDs said that his patients who do best are those who sauna. Another LLMD said there was a NASA study decades ago showing that the sauna increased the efficacy of abx and that it also stimulates the spirochetes to divide which is when they're most prone to being killed by abx.
Personally, I felt depleted by hot baths but not the sauna (now that I'm doing it as prescribed by my LLMD). I like that I control just how long and how hot in the sauna. It's a little more variable with a bath.
Cheers, D
