Fish fry helps firefighter's family

Emergency workers held a fundraiser to help a local firefighter with his family's medical bills.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Some local heroes fried more than 500 pounds of fish and fed lots of hungry people Saturday night.

Members of the Charlotte Fire Department got together at Trinity United Methodist Church to put on fish fry to raise money to help a fellow firefighter.

The wife of Capt. Steven Richards is undergoing treatments for Lyme disease, and their insurance won't cover the cost. So the department decided to help out.

``It came out to about $1,200 a week for the treatment, and we just thought that we'd step up and try to help them offset the cost,'' said Capt. Peter Lambeck.

According to Lambeck, the treatments are working and Tammy Richards is well on her way to recovery.

Not to be difficult, but I work with childhood cancer patients and their families are wiped out financially also. I know many cancer patients that have had to hold fundraisers to pay for life-saving treatments.

This is not intended to be a slight in any way, believe me I understand the devastation Lyme causes (financial and otherwise), I just wanted to make that point.

Have also seen many fundraisers and collection jars in stores and restaurants for cancer and transplant patients.

Same for people who have housefires.

I do agree that the insurance companies are much more accepting of "nontraditional and experimental" treatments when it comes to cancer.

That's where the real changes are needed -- besides educating docs of course.

Just my opinion.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to see if anyone else has held a fundraiser to help with your medical costs.

I am going to the bank today to see about opening a trust fund with my husband's medical bills as the beneficiary and my brother-in-law as the trustee.

Our family and friends are interested in helping us with the cost of the IV antibiotic treatment which the insurance will only cover 30 days for.

I also am trying to look into what can we do as a fundraiser? Do you have to be established as a non profit organization?
