Hi, I am new, have been reading and learning. Thanks for the great info and knowledge! I started IV Rocephin this week--my first antibiotic for lyme. I will be pulsing on three days at 2 g twice a day, then off four. I started at lower dosages this week to make sure of no allergic reactions--ok in this regard.

My question: my liver started hurting this afternoon. Feels like heartburn, but pretty sure is liver--pain at base of sternum, under ribs, thru to back. Hurts to breathe, slouch (like compressing things), and just generally. Should I take my dose of 1g rocephin tonight or wait till my liver enzymes are checked?

I have emergency numbers for my good doc, but don't want to call her unless I feel it is a real emergency. She works very hard and everyone needs time to decompress.

Blessings to you, especially if you could help me out with any info. Thanks. Jen

It's actually pretty hard to tell what's going on. Die off from Bb can occur throughout the GI tract and cause a lot of referred pain.

Rocephin is also notorious for causing gall bladder problems, and some folks using it have had to have their gall bladders removed.

And then there's the liver....

There are a variety of things you can do to flush and protect your liver and your gallbladder, and you need to be doing them constantly while you are on abx. I have a list of things to do that I've collected and will email it to if you need them (PM me your email addy).

As for calling your doc -- I agree that you don't want to make off-hour calls unless it's a real emergency. You're the only one who can judge, but it probably wouldn't hurt for you to skip your dose tonight and check with her office in the am if you're experiencing a lot of pain.

Thank you Minoucat. Can you tell by the way it feels whether it is gallbladder or liver? Thank you for your info. I am taking a detox homeopathic and maybe will add burbur. On my off days I plan to do a liver flush following Patricia Kane's protocols in the Detoxx Box--not necessarily a lyme protocol, but has helped me to keep things moving in the past.

I will send you my email addy by private message and will appreciate your ideas/experience.

Any other advice out there? Thanks. Jen

Hi Jen,

I have not yet done IV Rocephin so I cannot speak from personal experience. I can only relay a couple of other thoughts that may or may not be accurate in your case.

If you read the mainstream medicine symptoms for gallbladder problems - they are more in line with what you are describing. I only know that because I had those kinds of symptoms before Lyme and had to go through gallbladder scans, etc. In hindsight, I think it was my undiagnosed gluten issues.

When I developed serious liver problems from Lyme treatment, I had bad liver pain because my liver had so much inflammation and cell death. The hepatologist said that the liver pain was due to the inflammation. My liver pain was definitely on my right side, not in the middle. But again, I defer to all the knowledgeable people on this board who have actually experienced Rocephin.

Are you on Actigall to try to prevent gall bladder problems?

Keep us posted - good luck!
Jill

Sounds very much like gallbladder to me. Gallbladder can hurt when touched if it is inflamed, so the slouching thing sounds right on.

I would call the LLMD in the daytime.

Right now it is not emergent, BUT a full on gallbaldder attack can be very emergent and you DONT want that to happen without your LLMD telling the ER duck what is going on.

good luck and super glad you are on some of the best meds!

After my 3 week on the big R, my liver/gall area also started to act up a lot. Under the supervision of my LLMD, I started doing the clark gall/liver flush every other week. After the first one, boy did I pass some big stones. Felt very good. doing these saved me. It was truely amazing. I would only doe these while on rocephine with the guidence of your doc.

Definitely follow advice given here. It was all good!

I would ask the LLMD to prescribe some Actigall IF she wants you to continue the Rocephin.

Keep us posted, OK?

Welcome!

I would call your doctor and tell them what you are experiencing. Are you on Actigall to protect your gallbladder? have you had allergies to Rocephin before? Its good you are asking questions and learning as you go, that will help you alot, and help you get better too.

Update: Thank you all for your advice and ideas. Maybe it is more gallbladder than liver. I was concerned about liver as I had been on diflucan before the rocephin and had experienced the same sensation. Quit the diflucan for a few days and it went away. Don't mean to get graphic, but much gas with this, so maybe that is gallbladder.

Yes, I have a prescription for actigall, but hadn't started it yet--was on pretty small doses of the rocephin, and just hadn't picked it up at the pharmacy. Will get it immediately and get started.

I went ahead with the antibiotics last night and everything went ok. Feeling better. Thanks for your care and ideas. Jen
