Has anyone heard about penicillin making lyme worse? If so, how about some links. Being I have a hip replacement and heart murmer, I have to take antibiotics with any procedure, including teeth cleaning. All the docs Rx amoxicillin for this. If this is not good, I would like to know. Thanks Mary V

I took penicillin as my first abx in my anti-lyme regiment. It was part of a challenge to make sure I wasn't allergic. I've been on amoxycillin along with other abx for over a year.

Human neutrophil calprotectin reduces the susceptibility of Borrelia burgdorferi to penicillin.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochetal agent of Lyme disease, is susceptible to killing by a variety of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) components. Some are most effective against metabolically active B. burgdorferi. The abundant PMN cytoplasmic protein calprotectin, elevated 10- to 100-fold in inflammation, inhibits the growth of spirochetes through chelation of the essential cation, Zn. Since the action of some therapeutic antibiotics depends on bacterial division, we investigated the antibiotic sensitivities of spirochetes in calprotectin. In physiologic calprotectin, B. burgdorferi is not eliminated by therapeutic doses of penicillin G; in contrast, doxycycline is effective. Calprotectin may modify the clearance of spirochetes at sites of inflammation.

Evidence of a conjugal erythromycin resistance element in the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.

Borrelia burgdorferi strains exhibiting macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin type A (MLS(A)) resistance were identified. Erythromycin-resistant (Erm(R)) high-passage strain B31(HP) was isolated by plating on media with 10mug/mL erythromycin; however, Erm(R) low-passage strain B31(LP) required induction with 0.025mug/mL erythromycin prior to plating. Ribosomes from Erm(R) isolates bound lower levels of [(14)C]-erythromycin. Borrelia burgdorferi Erm(R) cells grown with and without carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone accumulated the same level of [(14)C]-erythromycin. Culture supernatants from Erm(R) cells grown with erythromycin inhibited the growth of susceptible Enterococcus faecalis. Erythromycin resistance was transferred from B. burgdorferi by mating to E. faecalis and Bacillus subtilis. These data suggest that the MLS(A) resistance in B. burgdorferi is due to a novel transferable erythromycin resistance methylase (erm) and not to efflux or inactivation of erythromycin.

Tetracycline encourages resistant bacteria
The results of this study have shown that the addition of tetracycline to microcosm dental plaques alters their composition and enriches for bacteria resistant to tetracycline and other unrelated agents.

TETs = tetracyclines These results indicate that TETs are not able to act directly on the synthesis of these cytokines, but they may modulate other pathways that could in turn be responsible for the inhibition of IL-1 alpha and TNF-alpha synthesis.

Antibiotics predispose to cancer. This would include tetracycline, penicillin, aspirin, diuretics, immunosuppressants, Azolid, Butazolidin, Presamine, Tofranil, Sk-Promine, Tapazole, Methotrexate, antihistamines, amphetamines, Atromids, etc.
It is well-known, by biochemists, that most cancer victims have a deficiency of not only all vitamins, but also hydrochloric acid, potassium, magnesium, iodine, and many trace elements.
Cystic forms of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato: induction, development, and the role of RpoS. Murgia R, Piazzetta C, Cinco M.
Dipartimento di Scienze Biomediche, sez. Microbiologia, Universita degli Studi di Trieste, Trieste, Italy. [email protected]
It has been demonstrated recently that cells of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the etiological agent of Lyme disease, transform from mobile spirochetes into nonmotile cystic forms in the presence of certain unfavourable conditions, and that cystic forms are able to reconvert to vegetative spirochetes in vitro and in vivo.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinetics of conversion of borreliae to cysts in different stress conditions such as starvation media or the presence of different antibiotics. Using the same experimental conditions we also investigated the possible role in cyst formation of RpoS, an alternative sigma factor that controls a regulon in response to starvation and transition to stationary phase.
We observed that beta-lactams penicillin G and ceftriaxone, the antibiotics of choice in Lyme borreliosis treatment, favoured the production of cysts when used with serum-depleted BSK medium.
In contrast, we observed a low level of cyst formation in the presence of macrolides and tetracyclines.
In order to elucidate the role of the rpoS gene in cyst formation we analyzed the reaction of the rpoS mutant strain in comparison with its wild-type in different conditions. Under the same stimuli, both the wild-type borrelia and the rpoS knock-out isogenic strain produced cystic forms with similar kinetics, thus excluding the participation of the gene in this phenomenon.
Our findings suggest that cyst formation is mainly due to a physical-chemical rearrangement of the outer membrane of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato leading to membrane fusion and controlled by different regulation mechanisms.
Notice.."low level" of cysts, not NO cysts.
Get your teeth cleaned with nothing but baking soda under pressure (common today with up-to-date dental offices). No dental "work" if at all possible. A LOT of fillers, glues, etc. contain zinc...makes Bb a happy camper.

Many of us are on Bicillin, which is injectable penicillin.

Thanks everyone...I was just wondering because someone on another forum had said penicillin made Lyme worse. I had not heard this before. Also Marnie, I printed out your post so I could reread and study it more. Mary V

Everyone is different. maybe that person herxed on the penicillin.
Penicillin ( amoxicillin ) was my first line of abx for lyme and it worked GREAt. Nothing else I took in two years of steady abx worked,
so Im not on bicillin ( penicillin) and doing pretty darn good.
It does and can push the cystic form of lyme, so cyst busters should be used with or after.
