Friends found a tick on their 4-year-old while visiting Long Island. Luckily they saved it and will have it tested (lab suggestions? Is IGenex best for tick testing?)
However, their Midwest pediatrician fought preventive anitibiotic treatment--finally wrote an RX for 13 days of amoxicilllin.
Can anyone speak to 1) dosage and 2) duration of treatment when you know there was a tick bite, for young kids? Just wonder if anyone has had personal experience with this. The pediatrician refused to consult with a ped in the Northeast who always treats preventively for bites!
Thanks!

Hi! I'm not familiary w/this, but did you check Dr. B's 05 lyme treatment guidelines. SURELY, he addresses children as well as adults there ok.
I've read that treatment should be 4-6 weeks; you want to kill off the sketes good IF it has lyme or co-infections.
That radio interview link I gave where LINDA LD;s post about being on the radio in Tenn. addressed being bite about a tick too.
Dr. said to forget the SENDING TICK FOR EXAM; use that money on meds! He said to mainly watch daily for ANY/ALL SYMPTOMS: act now when you see anything occuring.

I don't know why all of a sudden Dr.'s are using amoxy as the first line of defense with Lyme. It used to be Doxycycline since in also treats Ehrlichia.
Dr. B's guidelines say that you should take:
*Amoxicillin- Adults: 1g q8h plus probenecid 500mg q8h; doses up to 6 grams daily are often needed Pregnancy: 1g q6h and adjust. Children: 50 mg/kg/day divided into q8h doses.
Also, the treatment duration for a tick bite with no EM or symptoms is 28 days.
If a EM rash appears the duration should be for 6+ weeks and if there are symptoms, the duration is indefinite based on symptoms.
I don't agree about not having the tick tested. I know someone who had been tested and it came back negative so they thought they were OK. Their family had the tick tested and it came back positive.
That convinced their doctor to start treatment.
Hope this helps,
Corgilla
