i'm taking biaxin/plaq/minocyclene and have had my ALT a bit above normal level recently and i've asked my LLMD if i can do periodic blood work (say once a month) to check my blood levels and he thinks it's not necessary as oral abx rarely result in -ve impact on liver, organs, etc.

I seem to disagree as i've never had an ALT above normal range until i started taking heavy oral abx. anyone have any thoughts? do you monitor or have you had elevated Liver enzymes on just oral abx?

thanks

You should definitely get liver functions done. Mine skyrocketed to eight times the normal level from oral abx. I was on doxy, neurontin (for neuropathy) and nizerole (for yeast). Then I added Flagyl and they kept going up. Then I dropped the Flagyl and added Biaxin and they kept going up. Then I dropped the doxy, added Mino and Plaquenil (now I'm on your combo of three).

Recently, my liver functions started to go down a lot, but that was ONLY after I added milk thistle (a MUST to keep your liver healthy w/ all these abx), cysteplus and glyceine, all for liver support.

Moral: Definitely have your MD do blood monitoring. And I would add in those supplements for liver support to try to head off any liver toxicity. I have my liver functions done every 2-4 weeks.

Good luck!

Mine does not monitor the ABX levels which I which was being done. The only doc I have heard talk a lot about that is Dr. B.

Of course, liver, etc. panels are done monthly.

I think it's not only perfectly reasonable but also much safer to have a basic blood work up done periodically as you take antibiotics. I think most LLMDs would do this when someone is taking antibiotics for an extended period of time.

Even if your doctor is right and there is a low probability, what;s the harm in checking every 4 weeks or so to make sure things are ok?

My primary care physician wrote a standing order for monthly liver function tests and CBC after my LLMD put me on the Minocycline/Biaxin/Plaquenil combo.
