Hi,

My 4 year old daughter is being treated by Dr. J and has been on abx for about 16 months now (most recently omnicef and zithromax).

She takes one probiotic pill per day (Dr. J saying that is sufficient for 4 yo). Other than a multivitamin and watching the sugar, I really don't do anything else in the way of supplements, etc.

About 3 weeks ago she started complaining of stomach aches. She complains many times during the day - and there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason. It hasn't affected her appetite, and her bowel habits seem normal and unchanged. But it is obviously causing her a lot of pain.

Stomach pains or digestive problems have never been a lyme symptom for her.

The stomach pains don't awaken her at night, but she is having trouble initially going to sleep as she complains about the pain.

Dr. J stopped her abx about 8 days ago to see if that might alleviate the pain. It has not.

Her pediatrician had her do a stomach x-ray, blood workup, urine analysis and stool analysis (for stomach bacterial infection). All tests were normal.

And maybe also worth noting, she developed a chronic, dry cough about 2-3 months ago. There does not appear to be any problems with her lungs, or no post nasal drip indicated.

Question: I'm wondering if it was a problem with the abx and her stomach, should the pain have subsided by now after 8 days of no abx?

Or can I assume that it is something other than the abx or lyme causing her stomach pain?

Thanks for any thoughts! One of the hardest things for me is to sort out when something going on with her is lyme related or not.

lead poisoning is the first thing that comes to my mind. It can involve the GI tract and children are more suseptable.

Yeast = acidophilis maybe diflucan yogurt.

Or could be Clostridium difficile =
Symptoms
Diarrhea is the most common
symptom. Mucous-like
stool is often present. Other
symptoms may include blood
in stool, fever, abdominal
cramps and/or leukocytosis.
Symptoms may appear as
early as 1-10 days after the
initiation of antibiotic
therapy, or as late as 2-6
weeks after discontinuation
of the antibiotic.
Treatment
C. diff is treated by first
discontinuing any antibiotics
which may be causing the infection,
then treated with
Metronidazole (Flagyl), 250
mg PO QID for 10 days
(98% cure rate) or Vancomycin,
500 mg PO QID for 10
days.

All my younger (4) children had severe stomach problems and all have lyme disease. They all have some interesting health issues in common and some others not in common that have developed because of lyme disease, thyroid, insulin . .

In addition to abx they take milk thistle, magnesium & acidophilus. But overall their stomach problems went away/lessened when they started drinking kefir. I make my own but the local health food store should have this in the refrigerator section.

If you are ambitious, the homemade is much healthier and doesn't take alot of effort. It will rebalance the flora in the internal tract as well as many other things.

My 7yo was dx with reflux and ibs. He was taking meds but now drinks kefir a few times a week. He also takes flagyl and zithromycin for lyme and doesn't have any of the problems he had.

Was it a mycoplasma or an out of balance gut flora - I don't know. My kids don't suffer from stomach problems like they did.

Thats what is working for us -

elle

PS - kefir should to be taken 4 hours away from abx like other probiotics.

You have gotten a lot of good ideas already.

I am so sorry to hear that your little girl is hurting. My kids have had stomach problems and so stressful for mom who is nurse and cook!

One more...my son had stomach pain that ended when we removed milk and wheat from his diet.

My daughter and I are now off milk, other than good yogurt.

You could do some reading under Leaky Gut.

The other thing that comes to mind is that my daughter tends to do well stomach-wise on different abx for the first week or so then a cummulative reaction sets in and her stomach gets messed up. We do MWF dosing which helps a lot.

Oh! Stomach pain is symptom of Bart.

Hope all our suggestions are not completely overwhelming. I will pray right now for the most important path be exposed quickly.

Hope your baby feels better soon!

Everyone,
Thanks so much for all of your suggestions.

My biggest concern is how to sort out lyme/abx related problems from health problems stemming from something altogether different.

She has negatively tested for lead poisoning, and I do not think it is c diff from the description.
I have read some about leaky gut, and will look into it more.

I will try adding kefir.
Can anyone recommend amount for 4 year old?

Also, I am still wondering if the stomach pain is caused by abx, would the pain subside after 9 days of not being on it? I am still waiting to hear back from Dr. J as to whether to start abx back up again.

Thanks,
pacific mama

My daughter now 11 had horrible stomach problems...she also has lyme. I took her to an accupuncturist while on abx and her stomach hasn't been a problem in over a year. I would highly recommend you take your daughter to one.
