Hi, My 15yr old daughter took oral levaquin, 500mg plus 400mg Zith last night before bed.
She has done a few infusions of levaquin with good results.
The plan was Zith MWF for month, then add levaquin MF. I have procrastinated a bit on adding it as she did take 2x oral a few months ago and was pretty miserable with herx.
Well, last night, her legs hurt within an hour or less of taking the abx. Her description of pain sounded "tendony" or ligaments. I think about a 4 out of 10 as much as I can tell.
I am concerned, of course. Talking to dr. today about it.

char, i have heard of this before. be very careful as it may not be a herx-it could be a reaction to the drug itself. levaquin can cause tendon problems.
i looked up the drug facts on walgreens.com just to be sure and it says to contact your doctor immediately if you have "tendon, joint, or muscle pain or swelling" or "sudden leg pain."
i'm not trying to scare you, it could be a herx, but i do know a woman whose tendons were messed up because of levaquine. allison

Yes, PLEASE be careful! I had such horrible pain on levaquin and I thought I was herxing. I was so hell-bent on killing the keets that stuck with it.
Finally, after hobbling down the hallway like a 100 year old lady, I called my LLMD. He said it wasn't a herx at all and took me off of it immediately.
So I had suffered needlessly for three weeks. The tendons in my feet are still screwed up and it's now four months later. I can barely walk in the morning until I get my feet warmed up.
My LLMD said it will go away eventually, but the levaquin was SO not worth it. Some people don't have a problem with levaquin, but I did.

Oh, one more thing - my tendon damage happened the SECOND time I was on levaquin.
The first time I was on it for 6 weeks and didn't have any tendon pain. It worked well for me, even though I had a bad herx. After a short break, he put me back on it, and that's when the chaos ensued!

Levaquin is a fluoroquinolone - a certain class of antibiotics.
Please use extreme caution, because, in some cases, debilitating and sometimes very long-term adverse effects are known to occur with fluoroquinolone abx.
I'm not a Dr., but I would stop the Levaquin and talk to your Dr.
I don't mean to scare you. Some folks do just fine. But it's best to be aware.
Warmest good wishes to you and your daughter!

same thing happened to me within an hour of levaquin. ankle and calf pain and numbness, especially right in the ankle joint where it was sharp. i don't know if it was the drug or a herx, but either way, not something to mess with.
hope your daughter is doing better by now.

We won't be taking anymore Levaquin.
My girl is OK...I keep asking her- How are you leg-wise?
Char
Char the levaquin damage or results of it can last quite a while dont let her and I know this will be hard kids will be kids but no running springing into fast movements or lifting anything heavy or jumping twisting fast no running up or down steps even after the soreness is gone and your kid can recognize it its deep down along the bone its different than the normal sorness you get from lyme or at least mine was. I hope your child isnt over weight at all it puts more stress on the ligiments tendons.
It was a good year before I even remotly thought I could do anything I even felt walking up steps but I also already did the damage tore one while on levaquin and one six months later off of it.
I also tore one before treatment just the lyme while on vacation that snapped like a 22 pistol in my calf leg was all black&Blue from knee down whole way around.
I must tell you I never had any problems like this before lyme, actually even though I was overweight I was athletic worked out and walked 6 to 8 miles every other day played frisbe football hiked camped hunted fished faught forest fires for a living marked timber etc.And enjoyed it.
