Melanie has not been feeling well. Yesterday she was even worse and ended up at the hospital. She got out late last night.

Please see posts below.

Our dear Ms. Melanie had to make an emergency trip to the DUCK MOTEL! And it was a BAD, BAD duck motel.

They wouldn't allow her to park near the entrance of the ER and she had to WALK about a mile to get through the door... AFTER driving herself there!

She was "stuck" there for hours on end... left all alone... not allowed even a sip of water.. was stuck with needles.. given painful irritating tests... and she had not one.. not two.. but MULTIPLE ducks jerking her around and treating her badly... WHEN they came close to the corner where they tossed her!

And you KNOW she was feeling quite poorly to even THINK of going to the duck motel in the first place!!! Bless her heart. I know this made her condition MUCH worse!

After being there for what seemed like forever... she finally broke out of prison. She was totally kicked around and given no answers for the problems she was having.

I'd bet if we look closely we will see duck feathers sticking out from between her teeth!

[Eek!]

After poking and proding and making the poor girl 10 times more miserable.. they moved out of her way as she scrambled to the door and finally busted free.

She has been in a lot of pain again today.. and could not work. The pain is still not explained.. even after the ER trip. I believe they told her to take some advil... and that was their only solution!

Sooooooooo... all alone she sits in her room.. sleeping on and off today... hoping for the pain to end. I wish I could take one giant step and be there to help her get food.. and what ever else you do to make someone more comfortable. Fluff her pillow??

Anyhow.. My bet is she could use a few hugs and howdy do's to cheer her up... and a lot of prayers to make the pain go away!

HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON dear friend!!!!

Mel, I'm so sorry to read of your being so sick in pain, and them walking you to death to get in the ER door.

Then to get the run around from them as usual. Best wishes on getting better SOON! You're our inspirational go getter on board, and there to comfort everyone. Now it's YOUR TURN.

I pray you can touch base with a real doc soon and maybe get some answers. Please post when you can.

Melanie,

So sorry to hear your having a rough time. Sending healing energy to you.

Advil? You're having stomach problems and they gave you advil?

"Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), and naproxen (Aleve) can cause stomach inflammation by reducing a substance that preserves the protective stomach lining (prostaglandin)." -- Drug Digest

So the Duck approach is to make it worse ....... wow.

Many hugs to you ........ please call your doc ........ perhaps consult an alternative practitioner for healing herbs/remedies.

Post when you can, we are all concerned.

Hey there Mel..I sure hope some ticks dropped off to help them with their research.

I am sending you an ice cream cone..Well, you must pretend. I personally have a little trouble with them if you have ever read some of the junk that my dear chum Carol writes about me.

I actually was at our Fair/Carnival last night..I have a museum/lyme table..And I did not spill a drop..So no pasties this week..

And I wonder how our dear Miss Tin can eat the stuff and not get pasties.. Hum will have to ponder that a bit..Does that mean she is neater?

I hope you will soon be up and in the pink of things. Hugs to you..

You are always attempting to find creative solutions to lyme political and personal problems. I really hope someone is helping you with your pain.

I love this quote from lightfoot:

My dear friends,

My Goodness...I just don't know what to say...besides Thank You.

Please, don't worry...I will be just fine, and back at it soon.

I should have known better than to expect an ER experience to be anything other than disappointing...but this was the most awful ER I have had the pleasure of visiting.

However, I also realize that we tend to pass off most things as ``only'' TBD related when we have been ill for some time.
And this is not always wise, especially when it is something new and ``could'' point to other causes.

So, I am at least relieved to know that whatever is wrong with me is not something that is critical right now.

All testing was inconclusive. A couple of flags in the bloodwork here and there...but nothing to raise alarm.

The ultrasound of the GB area was also negative.

The docs wanted to keep digging, but by that time (6 hours later) I was ready to get out of there. So, I insisted on being discharged ASAP.

So, I am laying off my meds for a few days, and trying to rest as much as I can. I was able to sleep most of the day and night. And am sure that will help tremendously.

Thank you each so much for the kind thoughts and well wishes. Just know that you are more appreciated than you could ever imagine.

Much love,
M

Gosh, Ms. Melanie. I'm feeling very relieved you're back home. Glad to have at least hopefully ruled out anything ominous because as you've pointed out, things aren't ALWAYS lyme and it's good to have that affirmed when things are scary.

Here's a cyberhug from far northern California. Feel better soon.

Hey Mel,

Glad you had it checked out anyway...cause you never know if it is related to TBI or somethin' else entirely.

Thanks for checking back w/ us as awful as you must feel.

Let us know in couple days how you are doing if you're up to it.

Any response from the LLMD?

I'm relieved to hear nothing was critical and let's keep it that way, k? Even more pleased to hear you were finally able to get some much deserved and needed rest.

Glad to hear you've survived the attack of the ER ducks!! GRRR!

You might need a Hida Scan if the pain is in the area of the GB. Maybe it's not functioning. The hida would show that. The test is painless except for the IV.

Hey Mel -

Did they check your appendix?

Just info to keep in mind - I have no idea but we had a similar experience here..
if you can find a nicer Doc to check this sooner than later -

(a good surgeon would be able to tell by pushing on the area and an overview of symptoms, test results, and your medications)

If you are on abx and come down with appendicitus
(confirmed by Doc J and in our experience) -
the abx could dampen all the usual symptoms -
meaning duller than usual pain than typical appendicitus, less than usual inflammation, lower than usual WBC count than they look to see, and an equivical cat scan or ultrasound of the appendix..
and a lower fever that usual, or even no fever.

WBC's in appendicitus they expect to go way
"out of range" -
however, in my son's case, they were "only" around 8000 -
but his "normal" (I happened to know) was supressed to begin with, usually around 4000 at best. His cat scan was equivocal, low grade fever, ect, ect.
I did ask (before having spokem with Doc J)
whether the abx would have effected things, as I saw his WBC's were elevated for him.
We got pooh-poohed ..

He was sent home with Tylenol - after all the "inconclusive tests"
and the next day I called the surgeon, who was immediately concerned because the ER Doc had not informed him that my son was on abx -
they had us come right back, and he was wisked into surgery on the spot. He had a very infected appendix -

Whatever may be going on with you may have nothing at all to do with this, but you do want to make sure and rule it out..
the abx will dampen the symptoms, but not at all treat or halt an appendix infection.

When we went back, one tell tale sign was a test for "rebound pain" -
Doc pushed in hard right on the appendix, and when you pull the hands off, it is pain felt while pulling hands off, "on the rebound".

You would want a professional checking that, tho.

I'm the last person to say "go back to the area in which ducks roam" -
but, only a hospital can deal with appendicitus - or a surgeon or on-call surgeon. Maybe your LLMD could get involved if you feel it should be checked out.

Good morning all,

I can't thank you enough for all the support you have shown...by phone, emails, here, and in good thoughts sent to the West coast!

I am hanging in there, and doing my best to keep ignoring all of this...hoping it is all Babs herx related.

This morning, I am going to write up a short explanation to fax to my LLMD...to seek further advice before beginning meds again.

So, I thought I would offer an update to you as well.

My fever continues, and has spiked again to 99.8 this morning.

The intermittent sharp pains continue in the whole truckle area, but are now more focused in the lower ab area... a few inches to the right of center and a few inches above my pelvic bone.

It is quite tender when I try to feel around there, and I ma still experiencing intermittent sharp, scraping pains in that area.

Tremors remain, dizziness, headache, waves of nausea, etc.

The differentials thrown around while in the ER were appendix, kidneys, spleen, GB, pancreas...and I can't remember what else. But I suppose nothing pointed to any one of those things specifically or I am assuming they would have acted on those suspicions. HA!

They did want to keep me and do more digging as I stated above, but it seemed like an impossible challenge for me at the time.

Hopefully, this will be a short run of these new symptoms for me, and I will be able to get back to the same old symptoms soon!

Anyway...onward and upward! [Smile]

Thanks to each of you for your help!!!

M

Hi Melanie. Are you being treated for Babs? Your symptoms do sound Babs related to me.

One thing that helped my nausea tremendously is papaya tablets. You can get them at a healthfood store. When you feel nauseous, chew on a couple of them. This helped me more than anything else I tried.

Let us know what your doctor says okay? I hope this passes soon.

Good Morning Melanie, so to speak. I do wish you were feeling better.

Lower right abdominal "could" be appendix. I believe the symptoms are low grade fever, tenderness on the lower right, nausea, vomiting, etc...

Not to say it couldn't be quite a few of the others mentioned, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, ovarian cyst, as well. It could also be herx related as what turned out to be the only answer I recieved whe I had that bout of abdominla pain and did the nasty ER thing to check the gallbladder.

Obviously, these are just my early morning thoughts with no medical background at all.

Please take care and do let us know what the LLMD advises.

Hang in there kiddo!
(I've been doing healing meditations for you every night but maybe I'm not so good at it.)

Anyway, as you said "onward and upward" and I hope this is the day you, finally, get some answers and relief.

We're all pulling for you!

much love
bluebird

Good morning Sam-I-Am!

Yes, I am currently on Babs meds, but ONLY Art 600mg, and Ketek 800mg.

I am supposed to begin Mepron at the end of the week.

The aches in the back began a couple of days after beginning the Art 6-19...and the rest began with the addition of the Ketek 6-30.

Perhaps Ketek isn't for me...or perhaps it is working quite well. Who knows at this point...but I am hoping my LLMD will have some experience to draw upon for a few answers, or at least a few better guesses. [Smile]

Hey Bluebird,

I too am beginning to suspect appendix now, but don't want to jump to any further conclusions. The very LAST thing I am in the mood for is another hospital visit!

Time will tell...

Much love,
M

Melanie, good to see you are able to get on the board..

Prior to some surgery that I had (which was stomach related), the gastro said it is often so difficult to judge the problem from the pain site in the abdominal area..Something about there is often generalized pain in the area and it may not be where you are having a real problem..Well that is confusing..so not sure it will help you.

Regards to me, my stomach had herneated thru my diaphram and my worst pain was close to the area that you mention..When actually the hernia was much higher. But sure enough, after the surgery, I rarely have the lower issue.

If it is the appendix, I think it can sometimes be hard to diagnose. Take Mo's story for an example..NOt pretty if one ruptures though.

Keeping you in my prayers and wishing you a steady recovery and a good bounce into healthy land. Hugs..lmt

Melanie, I am so sorry! I think you are so gutsy to have even tried to go... I hope you feel better soon.

Every since one of the above posters referred to it as "Hotel Duck", I have had the Eagles' "Hotel California" in my head.... The last verse seems particularly apt, with a few minor tweaks:

Sitting in the E.R.,
Wasting my precious time
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of this thing called Lyme.
And in the doctor's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back
to the place I was before
Relax, said the nightman
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave...

Hi Melanie,

Sounds a lot like hubby's G.I. problems except his pain is mostly on the left side. Anyway, we got desparate but not quite as desperate as you. Called a LLMD G.I. doc and had a phone consult -- talked us into doing another endoscopy -- after all it has been 3 years, but hubby did have 3 of them previously within a couple of years.

His problems really came out in force when he tried treating babs with quinine/clindamycin. Don't think he has a fever, but he keeps having really bad sweats and may run a slight temp then.

He toughed out the meds for 45 days and has been off them for about a month now with very little change in G.I. symptoms. I know it is not what you wanted to hear, but if you really stirred up the babesia things may not turn around as quickly as you are hoping.

Hope you can get some answers soon. Be sure and get copies of all labs from the ER -- something there may give you a clue. Hubby's G.I. doc agreed that his elevated Bilirubin was most likely the cause of his constant nausea and dry heaves, especially when it goes to normal while taking babesia meds and symptoms improve as well. He just couldn't take the stomach pain and muscle cramps and spasms any longer.

M,
I didn't mean to suggest another round of Duck, Duck, Goose at all. Sorry 'bout that.

It sounds like it 'could' be Ketek related; maybe the dose needs to be ramped up to (or Zith or Biaxin might be more tolerable).

I'm sure the good doc will have some incite into this.

When I had that gallbladder scare the doc eventually decided it was a herx. It resolved on it's own, thank goodness. May it go that way for you too. *crosses fingers*

I'm not sure what the half life is on Ketek but it may take awhile for it to be out of your system. Are you feeling any better at all?

Take care and feel better [kiss]

OK Mel...sending the escape mobile (my chauffer and limo) over to take you away from all that ails you.

Where would you like to go?

Go ahead.

A little dream therapy might just help.

Melanie...I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'd sure hate this to be Ketek damaging your liver! It may take awhile to show up on blood work.. UGH

At any rate....don't go too long without getting the appendix idea checked out again and the pancreas, and even the function of the GB.

Hope this helps in some small way!! [group hug]

Well...

I guess I have just turned into a big ole wimp!
My LLMD said to "keep going"!

Sooo, I will be resuming meds tonight...and doing my best "suck it up and ignore it" imitation. [Smile]

He is sending out a standing order for a kidney panel every 2 weeks. (the ER failed to run one of those, even though I showed them the docs orders and asked specifically for it)

Goodness.
I had better hold on tight, because I think this Babs stuff is going to be a bumpy ride!

Thanks again SOOOO much for all of the very kind thoughts, experiences shared, poetic insights and laughs. I don't know what I would have done these last 3 1/2 years without LymeNet and the incredible support and love I have recieved here.

Now, I promise not to be such a pest...well at least not so much of a pest for a little while.

You guys are simply the best, and I feel so blessed to know you.

Much love,
Melanie
