Well, my doc thinks I am doing well enough to add Flagyl to my regimen, but I am not sure if I want to take it.

I have not tolerated most abx well except Omnicef (which I am on now) and the side effects of Flagyl scare me. I have major GI issues, muscle problems, Reynaud's and tingling and numbness problems so I think Flagyl will just do me in.

Are there any alternatives to Flagyl? He wants to bust the cysts, but I don't want to bust my entire body in the process! Thoughts from you lovely folks??

Tinidazole is more effective, and way less damaging/irritating compared to flagyl. The only draw back is that it costs way more also. You can get it here as Tindamax, or real cheap in Mexico as Fasigyn. You can also have it compounded.

You're only a failure when you stop trying.

YES!!!! Ask your Dr. to prescribe Tinidazole, brand name Tindamax. This drug is MUCH easier to tolerate that Mitronidazole (Flagyl). DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL during your therapy with these drugs!

Do a Google search of "Brorson studies on Tinidazole and Lyme Cysts", which is on PubMed.

You need to take 1,500 mgs per day (500 mg. TID)
for this to work...IF it will work for you at all.

As you will learn, everyone is different in their responses to medications. A good Dr. will work with you to find the right combo.

Good luck to you! Have your Dr. read Dr. Burrescano's 2005 guidelines, also available on Google.

Peace, Love and Wellness,
JRW

Tinidazole IS much easier, but you can tolerate the flagyl if you make sure to RAMP UP the dosage. Start out with a small dosage....like I/4 or 1/8 pill. [ask your dr, of course!]

You MUST bust the cysts in order to get well. They contain lovely little spirochetes inside them.

You guys rock! Thanks for the suggestion. My doc is pretty open to suggestions, but wonder if he suggested Flagyl because he doesn't know about the alternatives you mentioned?

He is having me take a half a pill of Flagyl and work up to a whole one twice a day. However, if Tindamax is more easily tolerated, I wonder why I shouldn't start with it? I don't want something that will destroy my stomach and liver! ugh.

I have the same concerns about those cyst busting meds. Has anyone done well without those? Also, Can you just add them in for the last few months of treatment?

Thanks!

Yes, he probably didn't know about them. If you want to get well, you will take cyst busters.

It's not the stomach that bothered me....flagyl can cause depression. It can get bad! Flagyl is often used FOR stomach and intestinal diseases.

1/2 pill may send you into orbit....so go easy if you herx really hard.

Hi VaChick:

I took both. I started with flagyl when I was at my worst
with the encephalopathy. Pulsed it, and started pulsing everything because of toxicity. It had a great effect, although not perfect. Did that for 8 months until suddenly my central brain burned like a red hot coal when I took it.

Went off abx for 6 months to try naturopathy. Quit that, then Bart symptoms started to pop up.

Two months later, I resumed a mild pulse for both lyme and bart, but insisted on trying Tindamax. It was much better for me: Brain clearing and no brain pain.

Also, dosages for one are not good for all. I am 113 lbs, plus my physiology is quite responsive to meds, therefore my dose is lower than a big person's.

N.

question 1: I've done great! I'm 95% well. I doubt I would have gotten where I am without it.

question 2: I'm not sure. I would think it's best to take it earlier in treatment so you can get rid of them.

Every time you take something like biaxin or zith, ceftin etc....you are creating cysts. It would not be wise to have them accumulating in your body for a couple of years!

Your herx at the end might even be worse since you would have so many cysts by then.

Great information. I do remember that my doc said that he wants me to pulse the Flagyl something like two weeks on and then two weeks off??? Sound familiar to any of you?

Would the pulsing be the same with Tinidazole?

Thanks Tutu! I've learned so much from you all. Wish there was an easier way with the meds.

If you already have tingling and numbness issues, steer clear of Flagyl. Outside of the horrible depression it causes, one of the 2 known negative side effects are peripheral neuropathy, which happens to be what I developed after 3+ months of dear Flagyl. It's been 4 months since I've been off it, and it's still there.'Good Luck
