Hello dear folks,

I discontinued doxycycline 11 days ago. I am still breaking out in red itchy blisters. This has spread from one arm to the other.

This feels like poison ivy.

I spoke to a pharmacist who said sun sensitivity can last up to 7 days. I guess my skin didn't read the book.

I have barely been out in the sun. I developed a sunburn while driving recently.

Do you think this is just the sun sensitivity that's associated with doxycycline?

PS....I apologize for the spelling errors I made in a recent post...my typing skills have taken a plunge since I got bit by the tick. I am also embarrased by the large number of spelling errors that I have failed to recognize.

I have been told that doxy stays in the system regarding sun sensitivity for a while..My daughter was told to stop it a week in advance of going to the beach on vacation.

But some of it could also be an allergic reaction. Have you tried some benedryl to see if that helps?

NOt a dr, just my 2 cents..Good luck..

Hi Lymemomtoo,

I think an allergic reaction would be all over my body, not just on my arms.

I haven't tried Benedryl...that's a good idea.

Thanks for responding!

my new LLMD took me off both abx 2 months ago,
lately I've driven 50% of the 1100 miles roundtrip to Minn. & Wisc. seeing LLMD & allergist.

Burnt my driving arms & HANDS terribly! This trip wore a LONG-SLEEVED cotton shirt on driving arm & white cotton gloves on hands...no sunburn.

Itchy blisters ... use rubbing alcohol on ITCHINESS; really helped me & was hubby's idea! [Big Grin]

Update:

It's been over 2 weeks and I think I'm finally over this problem. The 2 most recent patches are drying up & have quit itching.

I didn't try Benedryl because it wipes me out. I rubbed some aloe on my skin & it seemed to help the itching.

Thanks for asking.

I'm feeling much better overall. I'm thrilled. I have a 5 more days of antibiotics and just started Flagyl (forgot to start it when I was supposed to), but will try to get a refill until ALL symptoms are gone.

My insurance dropped Dr. J. since I went in July. [Mad]

I got some results back from Igenex. I was positive for babesia, but my Lyme test was indeterminate. It is considered positive for Lyme because of the history of the bite & rash, clinical signs, and a positive response to the antibiotics.

Groovy2 - thank you so much for the tip about the cranberries and doxy!

My daughter started taking Doxy over a week ago. She had a really bad burn on her face and arms after being at the beach (never happened to her before - tons of sunscreen).

I happened to see your post about the cranberry interaction and put two and two together. She was drinking a lot of cranberry juice!

Since I read your post, she stopped the juice and went back in the sun all day yesterday. Although she was slightly red in the face, she had no reaction on her arms.

Thank you so much for posting that information. I did try to check the web for that kind of information and found nothing about that. How strange! Anyways, it's a great tip and I appreciate it.

I also ordered Ombrelle from Canada and am trying that today to see if it helps her face. I understand the FDA just approved sale of Anthelios in the U.S., but I'm sure Ombrelle is cheaper even coming from Canada.

I have had two very bad allergic reactions recently and they weren't on my entire body.

My allergic reactions sound a lot like your reaction to doxy although I only had a few tiny blisters while on doxy. I was very careful to stay out of the sun while on doxy. It sucks for kids. A friend of mine had her child burn badly on doxy so I knew what could happen. Keep in mind it doesn't say put sun screen on and its okay to be in the sun. It says no sun exposure. My friend had loaded on the sun screen and her son still had a terrible burn on his arms and face.

I am now on bicillin and getting tiny blisters only on my right hand. I am not allergic to penicillin so I'm baffled. Anyone have any ideas as to why all of a sudden I seem to be having allergic reactions to many different types of medication?
