I know oregano is a good anti-fungal, anti-baacterial and maybe anti-protozoal. Does it kill the good bacteria in our gut, too?

You mean like abx kills off the "good" as well as the "bad" flora?

Thats a good question!

Yes it does, as do all antimicrobial herbs to some degree. If it's capable of killing lyme and bart bacteria, it's surely able to take out the good flora, and a lot of the herbs are anti fungal also, so that means that they will take out the beneficial yeasts that are in Kefir as well. It's a constant battle until all abx and antimicrobial herbs are discontinued. Then it can still take months to build it back up to a level where it should be.

I disagree with the previous poster's comments unless data can be shown to back up the statements. I am not suggesting that it does or does not, but just that you can't make such a statement without supporting data.

The latest silver product for example from American Biologicals has had studies done that shows it does not impact beneficial flora. Thus, if one believes the study, a statement that all anti-microbials inhibit beneficial flora is speculation and without supportive data.

I haven't done a scientific research on this but I tend to agree with SForgrens thoughts.

Afterall, oregano is food. If the same foods fed the good and the bad microbes then we would not have to cut out sugars and simple starches in order to starve the yeast. Afterall, we would also be starving the friendly flora, right?

From all I have read, I believe PH balance is the key when it comes to foods that support friendly flora and knock out bad flora. It seems the acidic foods support bad flora and the alkaline foods support good flora.

Abx, on the other hand, are chemical killers. They are not food and they are not descriminate in who they kill. They create a highly acidic environment which is deadly to the friendly bacteria and supportive to the yeast. Also supportive to cancer cells.
