I have been sick since last Friday. Probably passed a small kidney stone. Had a raging UTI infection. My doctor put me on macrobid, which I have used before with success.

However

Ibuprophen which I take three times a day for joint pain, doesn't seem to control fever. The highest I measured was 101.9, and it goes up and down.

Tylenol is as effective as plain water for any joint pain for me, but I was just wondering...
since it has a rep. for bringing down fever, can I take it [or aspirin] and still take ibuprophen?

I think I am getting better, but am really wiped out! [considered the frequent urination involved in this illness and decided I should say "pun intended"]

Thanks,
Ann - OH

Ann, I do not know. My guess would be no..And I think a Dr or pharmacist has said this before..Just be careful..

Can you drink more fluids? I would also call the Dr..

Good luck..

Ann, so sorry you have been so sick!

I'm not a MD. At the ER last week, the MD recommended IBUPROFEN for my chest wall pain and emphasized, "DO NOT TAKE BABY ASPIRIN AS LONG AS I TAKE IBUPROFEN ... NOT TO TAKE BOTH TOGETHER; SEPARATE ONLY!"

So since aspirin is along the same as tylenol, my NON-MD opinion is also NO! don't take both together! TOO DANGEROUS. Bettyg [group hug] [kiss]

Instead of Tylenol have you tried ginger ale?

Ginger ale has been known to help bring down fever.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, everybody.
Have I been drinking water, and cranberry juice, and iced tea, and hot tea?

My tonsils are floating!

The fever is down a lot. Highest today was 99.2.
I will check with my doc tomorrow and will not take aspirin or tylenol.

Ann - OH

When I have been very sick with pneumonia or the flu, I was allowed to have ibuprofen and tylenol because they work separately.

You can call a pharmacist and clarify. Just don't take ibuprofen with any other anti-inflammatory.

Does anyone near you sell Xango? Works great for pain AND for fever.

I'm sorry you're so miserable. That's a lousy problem you have there.

Hope you feel better soon!!!

Yes Ann you can take both. This is the way we recommend it for people with temps. Alternate them. This way you are getting a medication for the fever every 4 four hours. It works very well.

Example:

Ibuprofen 8am
Tylenol 12 noon
Ibuprofen 4 pm
Tylenol 8 pm
Ibuprofen midnight
Tylenol 4am.

Hope this helps

My daughter was also told she could take both (even at the same time) to control pain. It didn't work in her case, but it was allowed.

My fever seems to be down today. I am still very tired, but feel like I am on the way to feeling better.

Next time I will try the alternating method recommended by Patti.

Thanks for all the good info.

Hugs,
Ann

I take Ibuprofen and Baby Aspirin together. I have a problem with my platelet count being too high, and baby aspirin is necessary. My hemotologist ok'd the combination.
