I am not sure what is going on with me these days. I have been on Ketek for lyme for four months now. A couple of weeks ago my heart started racing in the evening. It kept me up all night, but resolved in the morning. My llmd reduced my dosage of Ketek, but this past week it happened again. It started racing a week ago now, and it won't stop. When I am sitting down it is around 100, but when I get up it can go as high as 136. I have been to the ER and a cardiologist. Everyone tells me the same thing. There is nothing wrong with my heart or the rhythm of it. It is just going too fast. I am told it is more of a nuisance than a harm. I stopped taking Ketek a week ago thinking that would help, but it hasn't seemed to make any difference.

Unfortunately, I can't sleep at night and can't function during the day. I don't feel like I can give my 2 year-old the attention he needs. Today the cardiologist gave me a prescription for Toprol XL to help slow my heart down. I am scared and unsure of what is going on or how things will proceed from here. I am so tired that I can hardly see straight. Has anyone else experienced this? Did Toprol help? Does it ever go away? Most importantly, will I ever feel normal again? Any help, advice, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Utah,

I have been going experiencing tachycardia, 90s to 130s, all day along with insomnia for the last two weeks. ( I had a recent post tachycardia and scared). My doctor gave me the same medication that you were given. I've taken it in the past and it has helped bring the heart rate down, but it made me tired and depressed after a few weeks.

So, I am focusing on finding the root cause and choose not to take the Toprolol.

In 2004 I had an episode similar to this but far worse. I was so ill that I was in the ER every week for a month. I had tests numerous EKGS, an echocardiogram, Thyroid tests, cardiac enzymes, a holter monitor and a tilt table test to rule ot POTS (you may want to do search for POTS on this forum. Most doctors do not entertian this diagnosis unless you raise it). Everything was normal.

In time my symptoms completely resolved until this recent episode. I attribute my recovery to treatment for lyme and coinfections Also, neural therapy aimed at removing toxins from nerve gangia regulating the heart rate. Lastly, repleting Magnesium helped with the papitations and ionic minerals with the tachycardia. Both Magnesium and ionic minerals are something you can do on your own and are relatively safe.

I can't imagine caring for a child when feeling like this. My heart goes out to you.

And the most important thing is that YES you can get better.

My Grandmother has always had problems with tachychardia when her potassium is off.

She takes a little baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in a small glass of water to calm it.

She was an EKG technician and I believe she picked that one up from the hospital.

I know Magnesium is important to utilize Potassium (or something like that, I'm very tired). Maybe you should get your levels checked, you might be low.

Hope you feel better

PS - If you decide to take Magnesium. Don't take within 2 hrs before/after antibiotic. It can interfere with absorption.

Have you been checked for babs??

I have tachycardia and take the lowest possible dosage of atenolol...12.5 mg That is fairly tolerable. I find it more tolerable than the tachycardia!!

[I've had all the usual heart tests to rule out serious problems.]

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been tested for babs and tested negative. My llmd said that the test can be wrong though. So, who knows if I really have it or not.

I started the Toprol yesterday and it seems to help a little, but not as much as I had hoped it would. My pulse is still faster than it should be when I am resting. It doesn't race nearly as bad when I am standing or walking around, though. Does anyone know how long it takes for the medicine to take full effect? Is it possible that it will help more and more over the next few days?

I will look into the magnesium and other supplements that might help. Hopefully, I can get this under control soon. Thanks again.

I had a lot of tachycardia (high heart rates) issues pre-treatment and in parts of treatment. The cariologist also stated that my heart is in good shape.

There are a couple of areas that helped me that you might want to reseach - I went to 2 accupunturist and they gave me some Bupleurum & Tand Kuei Formula - The stuff I took was made by Golden Flower chinese herbs. - This formula is very good at calming the nervuos system pathway stuff - it works well with calming the adreanals also. This stuff is very benign. It helped me a lot during those periods.

I also see a NP who does a lot of muscle testing and we found that my lymph system was very clogged around the heart system. Once we worked on getting the lymph system drainage going better I felt a lot of relief in my heart. We also tested out some of the meds that I was on and we found that some of them realy were agrivating the heart - a doulbe edge sword here. I have to watch my dosing and keep the lymph system goning well in order to keep the drainage going well.

In additinon - babs really likes to raise cain with the heart area. Once I really started to kick down the babs my heart issues improved but again it could be any of the other bugs causing problemds.

I would be carefull with what heart meds you go on. My LLMD really warned me that these meds can be dangerious.
Good luck
