Do you know for a fact that Taurine was in his drink? Tarine is beneficial for the liver. I don't see how it could be a culprit in raised enzymes. It helps to detox the liver. If it was there, I can't see it being part of the problem.

Well, my friend stayed off the energy drinks for several weeks and when his liver panels were run again they were near perfect.
A dr told him that he wasn't the first patient he'd had that reacted that way to the drinks.
His numbers were so bad that it looked like liver failure was in the near future.
One of the numbers was over 750...above 235 is bad.
Just trying to warn people not to overdo it on things like this.
Wonder if it was the high levels of caffeine?

"Recently tests that assess the liver's function, especially its detoxification abilities, have become available. These tests are called "Functional Liver Challenge Tests" or a "Functional Liver Detoxification Profile".
During these tests the liver is challenged with caffeine, aspirin and paracetamol in safe oral doses"
Something else is going on with that person's liver.

Caffeine as indicator of metabolic functions of microsomal liver enzymes.

Drinks that contain caffeine including coffee, tea and some soft drinks dehydrate the body. Caffeine is processed through the liver and then eliminated from the body via the kidneys.
Caffeine increases heartbeat, respiration, basal metabolic rate, gastroenteric reflexes, and the production of stomach acid and urine; and it relaxes smooth muscles, notably the bronchial muscle.
All of these changes vary considerably among people and may depend upon the individual's sensitivity to this drug, his/her metabolism, or upon whether the consumer habitually uses or rarely uses caffeine.
How long caffeine's effects last is influenced by the person's hormonal status, whether he/she smokes or takes medications, or has a disease that impairs liver functioning.
Substances that may cause overactivity (or induction) of the P- 450 enzymes: Caffeine, Alcohol, Dioxin, Saturated fats, Organophosphorus pesticides, Paint fumes, Sulfonamides, Exhaust fumes, Barbiturates...
I think that person went over his/her "threshold" to detox.
NORMALLY, in healthy persons this drink should NOT be a problem. Possible genetic problem or simply "overload" stressing the P450 enzyme family.
Looks to be involved with the 1A2 P450 liver enzyme. It is also called (CYP1A2).
Interesting...
When chemistry professor John Dawson makes small talk about his research at cocktail parties, people often sit up and take notice.
It's not that he's investigating a cure for cancer or even the common cold, but the object of his research--a class of enzymes called cytochrome P450--plays an intriguing role in human metabolism.
``Cytochrome P450 enzymes metabolize caffeine, so if you're one of those people who can drink coffee in the evening and still fall asleep, you've probably got a high level of those enzymes,'' Dawson said.
Along with caffeine, cytochrome P450 also metabolizes other medications, preventing them from building up to toxic levels in the body. The enzymes also synthesize new compounds such as estrogen and testosterone. But P450's effects aren't always beneficial.
``It is known that P450 can metabolize certain compounds into DNA-altering substances, which, of course, can lead to cancer,'' Dawson said, ``so its ability to break down insoluble materials can be good and bad. I've referred to this in journal articles as the Jekyll and Hyde effect of P450.''
Because of the complexity of these enzymes--there are at least 50 different types of cytochrome P450 in humans and hundreds more in plants--Dawson's research has focused on their fundamental functions and structure. His work during the past 26 years at USC has provided a foundation for cancer researchers and pharmaceutical companies who target the enzyme in their studies.
Dawson's more than 150 research publications and $5.3 million in research funding also have earned recognition from the Memphis Section of the American Chemical Society, which honored him with the 2003 Southern Chemist Award. Recently, he was named the 2004 Carolina Trustee Professor.
``My wife jokes that I've been studying the same thing for more than 30 years and that it might be time to move on to something else,'' Dawson said. ``But there's a lot that we still don't know about cytochrome P450.''
For example, pharmaceutical companies have discovered that the cytochrome P450 in grapefruit juice can inhibit the metabolism of certain cholesterol reducing drugs. Individuals who are prescribed Lipitor, for example, are warned not to drink grapefruit juice after taking the drug. To do so would thwart their own cytochrome P450's ability to eventually metabolize the drug.
``It's quite possible that there are other interactions with these enzymes that could have similar effects,'' Dawson said."
With lyme, there is a huge prob. with P450 2E1 as all spirochetes ferment sugar -> ethanol.

Lymetoo,
Does your friend drink regular or diet? If it's diet, could it be the artificial sweeteners?
And how much does your friend drink? Multiple drinks a day?

Pulling up this thread after a search. I was wondering if anybody ever commented on drinking these.
First, I am very sensitive to caffeine, and don't drink coffee. I only have a cup of tea in the AM.
Well, last night I played 1 hour of platform tennis (doubles). This is only the 2nd time I played it, and let's just say I don't move much, and hope the ball comes to me.
I guess you could say I have a post-Lyme syndrome. Never the same since Lyme, can't build my strength back up, my stamina, muscle-mud, screaming aches/pains, brain fog, yadadada. But this year, things have been improving slowly (I think).
Anyway. I knew I was going to pay for last night today. I figured I could handle the body hangover. But I need my brain for work, and I was feeling that clogged up brain head thick and gooey, my ears were bothering me, you know. Just let me go somewhere and lie down and take a nap 'cause I'm no good to anybody right now.
I went to the caf at lunch time, and perused the Energy Drinks. Picked me up one, Rockstar Juiced Guava. I didn't drink the whole thing. But boy did it do the trick.
Cleared out the tox-brain quite nicely I have to say. I had quite a productive day, and what's more, my body pains and aches also lessened. Especially the neck, although that's pretty much always present. After playing last night, it was screaming. But I was elated just to be out there and playing among the real folk, almost pretending to be normal again : ).
I'm smart enough not to indulge in this kind of thing habitually. And I'll let you know if I ever get to sleep tonite : ).
FWIW, this product is 70% juice (mango, orange & passion), has 2000 mg taurine, 160 mg caffeine (16 oz can), guarana, ginseng, gingko, milk thistle, B vitamins, and L-carnitine.
I didn't know how much caffeine it had until reading up on it now. If I had known, I might not have bought it.
Okay, just thought I'd throw my experience out there, and see if anyone has any comments.
FYI, I read that the guy who created this product, he learned a lot from his parents who are herbalists. Hmmmmm, very interesting.
And if anyone's wondering, I certainly do not benefit monetarily from mentioning this product - I'm just another consumer.

Has your friend suggested that his doctor contact the company(ies) about his patients to whom this is happening? I wonder if something is getting into the drinks during manufacture that should not be. Or perhaps there are some sanitary issues at the factory.
Just a thought. If someone died from this, you'd probably never be able to trace it back to the drinks since the person would not have the opportunity to stop drinking them to see if they improved, so best to check it out before that happens. Well, unless it already has and no one knows.

Rockstar has guarana (which is naturally high in caffeine), milk thistle, ginseng and other herbs. Was this person on some medications that may have interacted with the herbs?

I would say it took me about 2 hours longer to fall asleep last night, and I woke up earlier than usual today.
But I feel fabulous.
That is the first product I have ever used that detoxed me. I guess I'll say detoxed me, 'cause it got rid of that post-exercise crappy feeling which has always kept me from getting too aerobic. I haven't been able to tolerate the aftereffects which sometimes lasts days (it used to last weeks, hence, I think I'm getting better). I have so missed that aerobic exercise burn/high. Talk about cleansing.
I will continue the experiment though, you betcha. But again I'm smart enough not to latch on to drinking this stuff on a daily basis. I'd never sleep .
