There seems to be some controversy over this and wondered what your own experiences were.
My LLMD says I can mix the powdered rocephin at home, put in a 20 cc syringe, and self administer over 30 minutes. Home health nurse showed how, and how to take all sterility precautions.
Pharmacy does not recommend this -- "bacteria could get in" -- but also manufacturer recommends diluting to at least 60 cc saline. Pharmacist prefers 100 cc. Because "rocephin is caustic, and may cause some damage to the vein [in the future]".
I think I am going to mix it myself. I know MANY on here who have done this. But I wonder whether I should move to a 100 cc saline bag drip, rather than a 20 cc push syringe.

Jeff~ My pharmacist always mixed my rocephin for me under sterile conditions. Separate room with vents...he was gowned, gloved and masked.
He also felt better about mixing it in a bag and having me infuse it in over an hour. He was not in favor of the syringe or any type of push. He really feels that rocephin is caustic, and putting it in close to the heart in a more concentrated form could lead to trouble down the road.
I decided to go the conservative route....infuse it over a longer period of time. I sure didn't want the possibility of heart issues later!
I also would not feel comfortable mixing it myself...if you see what they do at the pharmacy...the sterile conditions there...there is no way to match that at home.
