Can xylitol contribute to candida? I had thrush in my mouth and since my mouth is so dry all of the time I suck on xylitol mints and chew xylitol gum.

Yes, my ND said that there is still sugar in sugar alcohols, just less of it. For example, if it contains 8 grams of sugar alcohol, the net effect is about 2-3 grams of sugar.
He said to follow the 5-step plan outlined below. If you don't do all 5 steps, you won't successfully eliminate it.
"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."
Five Steps to Candida Elimination:
1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.
2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]
3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]
4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]
5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]
I sure hope this means you will now be able to beat this cra**y yeast!

Our own bodies MAKE a little of this sugar.
A yucky one time cure for thrush involves...clorax.
The "recipe" is on the internet and is "accepted"...not "off the wall" treatment. Been around a long time and a LOT cheaper than the Rx lozenges.
Yeast lower cholesterol.
There is a reason for everything...Back up routes that aren't any fun.
LOADING doses of probiotics are in order.
Keep your toothbrush clean! so you don't "reinfect". Those new UV light thingys to store your toothbrush in should help.

HI Hiker
I have not noticed xylitol makes my yeast any worse. I have been using it for years. I do notice the below mentioned sorbitol has some negative effects on me too.
I do believe xylitol & sorbitol are 2 different substances. You can read for yourself.
Click on the link below & scroll down to "Xylitol to the rescue"... Gives a detailed history & how & what it's made from:

Xylitol is actually helpful in killing candida according to Dr Ward Dean of Vitamin Research products. It certainly does not aggravate candida in my case: in fact as I write there is a chocolate meringue pavlova made with Xylitol in the oven[to eat at the weekend with raspberries for a family celebration]!
It is also active against dental biofilms in the mouth, so may be helpful in other respects.
However, Xylitol can come from corn or birch, so it may be worth trying a different brand if you feel you are reacting to it in some way.
