Flagyl can really effect the brain and is very powerful. That with Bi-cillan injections can cause some real herxing. My doc has me on it 2 weeks on then 2 weeks off for 3 cycles.

There is a substitute for flagyl that doesn't cause depression. I wanting to say it starts with a T. Just can't think of the name.

Perhaps if you do a flagyl search you will see the abx mentioned. I have seen people talk about switching to it on this site due to depresseive side effects of Flagyl.

Some doctors are sooooostupid...

Yes yes yes...flagyl,metronidazole can and often does cause LETHARGY...a type of weak depression like symptom.

Just ask any Pharmacist for crying out loud...they know more about it apparently than your doctor.

I have it every time I return to this cyst buster.

Tinidazole is another type of azol....I never did that one so I don't know if similar symptoms arise from it.

However, no permanent dammage. I was on metronidazol(flagyl) for almost two years exclusively...and when I stopped....so did the lethargy...

so you need it...just be aware of it's side effects.

Hang in there can't.........you should be noticing a lessening of painful nerve type pain...

be aware also...in case you doctor did'nt tell you that flagyl can cause peripheral neuropathy...

I already had it and I think that the flagyl helped my painful neuropathy a lot....by numbing some of the nerves...probably because it killed the cysts on my nerves that were causing the pain.

Folks...ya always gotta ask your pharmacists about what you're putting in your bodies...

they know more than any doctors.....cuz the doctors don't have time to research this stuff...

Just a word of caution. I heard someone mention damage sustained as a result of Dr. S's treatment. I have no idea what kind and can't remember who it was. Maybe you can do another post to find out.

I do know that you have to be very careful with Flagyl. Sometimes the dosage needs to be reduced if CNS symptoms are mild. If they are severe, it must be stopped. Sometimes people get into trouble with it, by assuming what they feel is a herx. [confused]

Please be careful!

I know Lyme patients who have had severe depression with Flagyl but also with Tinidazole. I think it's important to be careful on either one - let your loved ones know you may become depressed, talk to your Lyme doctor about these issues, etc.

I haven't been on these medications yet myself but have seen firsthand the depression these drugs can cause in Lyme patients I know quite well.

Take care,
Jill

By the way Cant,

I found taking 250mgs three times a day much better than taking 500mgs twice a day and or pulsing.

Like only take the Flagyl on weekends at the dose you're using.

Just a little help.......zman

I tried Flagyl, but could not tolerate it. I was only taking a tiny, tiny piece of a 250mg tablet every 3 days. I felt like I was going to die. I don't understand how anyone can get so sick from such a small amount of anything.

The worst symptom was that I got really congested and couldn't breath. Lyme doctor thought I might be allergic. I don't know how I could re-act so bad to such a small amount of Flagyl, even if I was allergic.

There may be another cyst buster alternative.

I am taking Alinia at present which is an anti parasite medication.

I believe it also has anti or cyst busting properties.

You may want to check on that as a substitute.

My LLMD said that some believe that Xango juice is a cyst buster. But I dont know where she got that information, and the Xango users here don't seem to believe it. But maybe it is worth looking into.

I am on my third day of flagyl and notice that I am more lyme arthritic than normal.

I'm not taking it tomorrow because I am going to a retirement dinner and I want to drink! LOL

And then I will resume on Friday and keep going.

I must say it is sort of discouraging to read people's stories -- for years some of you haave been on various things, and still quite symptomatic. I wonder what the future will hold for me.

Be careful about drinking the next day. The effects of Flagyl will last for a full day after the last day you took it as far as alcohol being toxic to your liver. I wouldn't risk it myself.

I have the same problem as Can't. Luckily I pulse flagyl 3 days of the week. Still I don't like taking flagyl. I notice that I have to be very careful when on flagyl, little things that upset me can make me sooo depressed.

On the other hand; it does wonders. So I will try and stick it out, rather take a break one week if I just can't cope.

Tinidazole is believed to be more effective than Flagyl (Brorson's). Guess it could cause more herxing than flagyl?

The tini might be less hard on you, but might not be. When I was on tini, I stayed in bed and cried for a week straight. I was pretty suicidal. I had to come off of it.

I don't know about the flagyl. Maybe up the cymbalta dose? or talk with your doc about another antidepressant that maybe you could add to it?

Good luck. Try it for a little while and do some experimentation, but if you start to get too depressed, try other methods.
