My husband was just at the neurosurgeon and it was pointed out how he has very hyper reflexes. This seemed to stump the doctor but he is suspecting cervical myelopathy.

But I've been reading here on lymenet about how many lymies also have hyper reflexes. It has also been suggested that magnesium would help.

But I need to know what kind and where can I get it.
Also what else should he be taking. As far as supplements go, he is only on artemisinin for his babs (with mepron/zith) and the B vitamins.

My doctor tested a number of Magnesiums for various factors inlcuding purity (many have toxins including solvents such as benzene, xyelene and toluene).

He recommends Magnesium Malate from Nutramedix to his patients. I have been able to cut down on the dose of Mg since switching brands.

I don't know if it's dangerous to have too much magnesium so what would be a good starting dose?

The best way to figure out the magnesium dose is to increase slowly until your husband's stool gets very soft. Then stop there until his body gets used to it. You can increase again following the same protocol.

My LLMD told me about 1000mg a day. But you can't start that high.

I also take Magnesium Malate from Nutramedix. I have been taking 1000mg for months with no problems.

Dr. B. recommends Magnesium L-Lactate dihydrate (it comes by the name of Maf-Tab SR)... or he used to recommend it on his treatment guidelines.

It is 12 hour release and supposed to be very highly absorbed by the body. You do not have to take many mgs of it - I think about 3-4 pills are the equivalent of 800 mgs (even though each pill is only 86 mgs). I don't know the exact conversion, but they are very powerful.

I have had very good success with it with my acupuncture patients who need magnesium (cervical spodylosis, bone spurs, migraines, blood pressure, muscle spasms, etc..)

I also take it and it is my favortie form. I find that Mag oxide gives people too loose stools to be able to tolerate high doses often.

The tricky part is that we have to order it from a pharmacists - BUT is is not prescription. I usually call the order into the Walmart pharmacy (they seem to know it the best) and it is available the next day at 11 AM. Or you can order it online and it costs less.

It is called Mag-Tab SR and manufactured by Niche.

****The only problem with it is if you are on meds that cannot be taken with magnesium since it is a 12 hours release. That's when I have to switch to the oxide, but I do not feel the same results with it.

i like magnesium glycinate by KAL. I take 2 per day which gives you 400 mg. I usually take one in the middle of the night since I usually wake during the night anyhow. It also helps me sleep deeper. Took awhile but really helped with the muscle "twitches" and no stool problems even if I manage to get 3 per day in, which is difficult when trying to keep 2-3 hrs away from abx.

you can get it at Vitamin shoppe.

Hi! I had Magnesium shots 2x a week and had magnesium alternating with IV claforan in the past, sometimes pills or power will not cut it! Magnesium shots do sting but they did the trick. I now take one MagTab SR (see above) a day, after IM I was on 3-4 a day and have tapered down to just one
