Help. I had my first PICC line pulled last week and a second put in this week. The first I had
for six weeks before developing a rash, blisters and oozing at insertion site and surrounding
area. The oozing liquid is clear. Dermotologist said allergic reaction. The second picc which I
got on Tuesday is now having the same reaction. I can not even put gauze
on it and am worried about getting an infection. Nursing service said to air it out as much as
possible as it is the only thing that does not seem to aggravate. First PICC line site only got better
when left alone to air it out. Even that site is still not completely back to normal.
Anything on my skin is causing a problem (paper tape, cotton gauze, etc). The blistering is
especially bad at insertion site and blistering formed under area where stitches are attached to
picc and skin. This has been moved to a different area of skin and a duoderm patch was put under so it does not directly touch my skin.
That was four hours ago and the itching is getting worse.
I saw on another post that it might be yeast. I have not noticed any other yeast symptoms. But,
if I were to treat it for yeast to see what should I put on rash? Any other ideas on what it could be? Should I have the line pulled? I was just starting to feel better. Ugh!!! Help.

If you could find a tape which did not aggravate you I would have the stitches removed. Hubby does not even get them put in anymore as they always cause irritation -- redness and swelling.
You might try silk tape -- that works the best for hubby -- he does not get a rash from other tapes -- just lots of redness.
This is not medical advice, just my opinion. I would try either tea tree oil on a cottonball on a small area of skin or oregano oil -- can get either at most any health food store. Or colloidal silver might work. All of these substances have some antibiotic and antifungal properties.

I had blisters & oozing around my insertions site. Turned out I was allergic to the Tegaderm dressing & had to switch to Op-Site dressing.
The MD also cultered the blisters to be safe.

I had exactly the same problem. I lost 2 picc lines as a result. IT WAS YEAST. First thing however....
Change the type of dressing tegaderm-> opsite-> what ever else there is.
If that does not fix the probem in a day or so, then suspect yeast. It is very hard to get under control. It took me about 2 weeks of very strict anti yeast diet as well as lots of nystantin. For a quick fix, ask for some fluconazole (it might even help with the Lyme).
Memorable aspects of the problem were:
It started out as very itchy
Clear serous discaharge
Sutures came out
Anywhere covered with tape or dressing was very sore and would weep clear fluid.
Moisture collection made it far worse (thus the bennifical effect of a gauze under the dressing but on top of the site.)
It was so bad that it looked lke the line had develped a leak and was causing a skin reaction.
Thats what happend to me... your results may vary....
Good luck.
