Hey Hanover- welcome to lymenet. I take Doxy with a slice (or two) of whole grain bread and it helps with the nausea. Haven't actually thrown up-but sure felt like it at times. Had some nasty burps.
I used to tolerate Cipro well, until the last time it was prescribed and I had a reaction with the first dose-so I guess things can change.
I'm supposed to take my Doxy now, but since I am going out for the evening I am not going to chance it,so I don't have to sit amongst a group of people feeling carsick.(we're out of bread)

I was lucky that I tolerated Doxy really well, although I did have to take it with food.
But I have heard of Lyme patients who do better on Doryx because it is the time-released version of Doxy. Have you talked to your Lyme doctor about that?
Hope you find a solution.

[ doxcy is to only be taken 1 hour before you eat or 2 hours after you eat.

I was fine with doxy as long as I took it with a meal -- not just a little food, but an entire meal. If I tried to take doxy with no food or a small snack, then I had terrible nausea.
The medical advice that I received is that it is fine to take it with food -- though not with dairy, or within two hours of mineral supplements (calcium or magnesium). Feel better!

I had to take it with food, and that meant bread and a meal, otherwise I would be very very nauseated.

NO way I could have taken it on an empty stomach.

More important to take it two hours before taking any Probiotic. A slice of bread, if it's not mealtime, is okay.
I am happy with the Doxy and a little nausea because I could not tolerate minocycline either-really thought I was going to die a couple of times.
After several weeks on the Doxy my body feels much "looser". I watch toddlers at church and was actually crawling around on the floor at a fairly fast clip! Dodged a couple of flying leggos with catlike reflexes, too.
Still find it hard to catch the woohoo guy with the mouse though.

I was told recently, that it's better to take doxy about 1- 1 1/2 hours after a meal so it gets into your stomach as the food is exiting.
That way you don't have doxy sitting in there burning while waiting for food to digest. Theoretically it should go right down on the tail end of your meal.
I haven't tried it yet but "with food" didn't work for me.
It makes a certain kind of sense. Anyone try it this way?

ps. the Doryx, which is timed release was much easier to take but is very expensive if you don't have insurance. If you do... definately go for it.

I also had a problem with keeping Doxy down on an empty stomach.
When I took it in the morning before breakfast, within 45 minutes I had nausea. So I started taking it 2hrs after and I did better, but if my stomach was too empty from a small meal after 2hrs I would have nausea.
I called my pharmacist and she said that I could take food with it, just don't eat food high in iron (i.e. dairy, many nuts, and some breads). She never said anything about Calcium or magnesium, but it seems many on this board believe you should not take magnesium within 2hrs of taking anything else.
I do know magnesium interferes with the vitamins...so please don't take magnesium with any of your vitamins for sure!
