I have been having hand pain from about 9p to 9a every nite for almost a week. This started after a week on 4000units of Heparin 2xday and 4 days after finishing 2 mos of 200mg Doxy 2xday.

The nurse called today (after the lab faxed to them) and said to increase my heparin to 6000units 2xday because my labs were down. I told her my hands had started hurting approximately a week ago after about a week on the heparin...she said that increasing the heparin should help.

I said if this is a herx then more heparin will make it worse. (The pain is more in one hand on the side that usually has the symptoms and it has radiated up to my upper arm on that side, so I think it is nerve pain.) She said that heparin is bactericidal, but to go ahead and go up to the 6000 units and use heat to take away the pain and then we will see what the labs show in 2 weeks!

Any thoughts or suggestions?? [confused]

I know. It's confusing!! But she is right! When you begin to feel bad on it, the solution is to increase it. Go figure!

I THINK it's because the heparin is clearing out fibrin and to push it on out, you increase the heparin. Now I could be wrong, but don't think so.

It's been awhile since I dealt with all that, but that is what I remember.

Why don't you check out the discussion board at www.hemex.com I THINK they still have one, anyway.

If you're still not satisfied and it continues to get worse, I would call the dr's office back again.

hope this helps!!!! [Smile]

Thanks Lymetoo! That must be why she said to increase it. I will go to the hemex discussion board tomorrow after some rest. [sleepy]

If you have a significant other, have him/her massage your hand... When I get that horribly painful "claw hand," I run to my boyfriend to fix me. [Smile]

Hand pain is often caused from tight shoulders in the thoracic outlet area, not actually from the hand. If the muscles around your shoulder are tight, they refer pain down to your hand.

Myofascial trigger point release can help reduce the pain, although it will be painful getting the treatment. Muscle relaxers can also help.

The other thing that helps my hand pain is Plaquenil. Nobody knows why, but it in some people it reduces inflammation and pain in the hands.
