Newbie here. Just dx. last week on positive Western Blot. Would it be advisable to get a flu and pneumonia shot?? Wonder if I have a higher chance of getting either with Lyme disease. Any suggestions are appreciated. Currently on doxy 100 mg x 2 daily.
Thanks!!!!! Geneal

Hi, Geneal -
If you have any kind of chronic/reactivated viral problem going on along with Lyme, like Epstein-Barr Virus or Cytomegalovirus, then you should check into getting flu or pneumonia shots before deciding to get one.
I've never had a flu or pneumonia shot. I was told that because of my EBV, I should never have one.
Just out of curiosity, I stood in line at one of the public flu vaccine places, and when I got to the front of the line, they were ready to give me the shot, no questions asked. So, I asked if I should have a flu shot since I have chronic EBV. The girl had to look it up in her book and told me "No, you should not have one".
But YOU will have to ask the questions because they won't!

100mg doxy 2 X daily- guess you are not going to an LLMD-that dose is not going to kill anything-just chase it underground where it can disseminate through out your whole body and come back later to totally disable you.
It's October-almost Halloween-what can I say- I just wanted to scare you- with the truth!
Welcome to Lymenet!
BTW- my LLMD told me NOT to get a flu shot-too many "extra" ingredients.

Had one (flu shot) last year, before lyme diagnosis. I have severe muscle issues that have come to resemble ALS.
Well, it's a good thing that the clinic where they gave me the shot is next door to my apartment, because I needed two friends to literally carry me home.
Spent the rest of the day deciding whether or not to go to the ER, probably decided against because I was too weak to go there---
The exacerbation lasted about 2 to 3 months.
Welcome to lymenet. I'm back after an absence due to severe herxing and a computer hard drive crash.

Thanks for replies. Am currently looking for LLMD closer to me as the one rec'd is 5 hours away. Hard to do with a 5yr old and 3yr old. Thanks for the welcome and the Halloween scare. Following the loss of my house to Hurricane Katrina, this is just what I needed. Oh well, they say God doesn't give you more than you can handle....I just wish he would pick on someone else for a while....

Wanted to post this - Originally thought I had Lyme so I've been following this site. Turns out I had a Miller-Fischer variant of Guillan- Barre syndrome caused by none other than the flu shot. I am now in my 8th month of severe cranial polyneuropathy.
It's a longshot that this would happen to anyone - let's just say I'm definitely playing the lottery more often.
I'd rather have the flu for six weeks than no smile for 8 months and counting.

My husband got a pneumonia shot last year because he has interstitial lung disease and was worried that he might catch pneumonia again. Well, the pneumonia shot triggered pneumonia and also helped to precipitate a relapse.
