Hi all,
I took my 2nd dose of Doxy this morning about 45 minutes ago. I blew my nose a little bit ago and that gagged me. I have a very sensitive gag reflex and doing that when blowing my nose is normal for me. Vomiting is not. I immediately started upchucking.

Fortunately, I didn't have anything on my stomach to come up and I'm not nauseous. But is this normal?

I know it says in the side-effects that vomiting could occur but not so severe to stop taking it. So, should I view this as an isolated event and continue to take it or is one instance of this enough to stop?

Thanks in advance!

Being new to all this Lyme stuff, I found a rash in June 06 so I don't really feel like I qualify to give advice .
I can only tell you my experience w/ Doxycycline.

I live about 40 mins. from my family Dr., didn't know there was such a
thing as an LLMD at the time, so of course my family Dr. follows the LDSA GUIDELINES

and said it was caught early and a $20.00 prescription of Doxy for 21 days would take care of it. Yeah, right. The only instructions he gave me were not to take it with milk and limit time in the sun.

Anyhow, I decided to take the first dose of doxy while I was there in town and I cannot begin to tell you how sick I
got. I did not throw up because I did'nt want to throw up my medication so I
toughed it out. That night was one of the worse nights I ever had, not counting childbirth.

So the next morning when I took my second dose, same thing.
I called the drs. office and the nurse told me to try taking it w/ food. That helped.

The next time I talked to my Dr. not anything related to Lyme, because I knew better, I did tell him that the nurse had told me to take it with food,
he said no you don't and ask me who told me, and that she shouldn't have told me that. But that was already after the fact. I had already finished "my 21 day cure".

So did taking it with food make the doxy less effective, I don't know.
I actually have to find that out myself because I'm to go back on it again next week .

So maybe try taking it with food until more people chime in. I'd like to know myself. My LLMD just retired so I feel quite lost myself.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I just talked to someone who has Lyme and she told me that Lyme patients should take Doxy with food. Has something to do with the type of bacteria in the cell walls but that's not proven.

So my mistake was taking it this morning on an empty stomach. Thanks!

NO way I could have tolerated doxy [or any other abx] without food!

I agree with Lymetoo - Doxy without food is just asking for trouble (at least in my experience). For a while I could tolerate Doxy if I was sure to take it with a meal (but NO dairy or other calcium containing foods/supplements). If I forgot to take it with food, I would either spend hours in the bathroom feeling like I would throw up any second or spend the next while in the bathroom ACTUALLY throwing up. After a while even taking it with food didn't help but for a while that was all that helped me keep the med down.

So I recommend always taking Doxy with food. Be careful about dairy and other calcium containing foods and supplements, take the Doxy at least 2 hours away from them.

I hope that helps!

Peace and healing,
Annie

Sickand tired..

Call your LLMD as soon as possible & let him know you are puking.

I have taken doxy on & off for 9 years & here are a few things that helped me:

*Always take doxy with food & a large glass of water to get it down past the esphogus
Some take it in the middle of a meal so the food can help buffer it.

*What ever you do do NOT lay down for at least 2 hours after taking it-it can reflux back up & burn your throat. (I used to nap propped in bed with pillows)

*Stay out of the sun. You can get a wicked burn on doxy

*Take your pro-biotics 2 good hours away from the doxy

* try not to take doxy with a dairy product or citus-(too acidic)

Good luck and make sure to call you doc

hope you can feel better soon [group hug]

None of This is not medical advise, just my personal opinion

Absolutely, you HAVE to take Doxy WITH food!

It's better to keep it down than to bring it back up and do you no good at all.

KENNEDY--that Dr. should have to take a dose without food.......!
