OK, I have been really bad diet-wise for a while now and am paying the price that is now uncomfortable and I don't want it to turn dangerous.

I am on Ceftin 1000mg, twice a day, and was taking 1 Diflucan a week. This is obviously not doing the trick on it's own when I have been bad with my diet.

Should I take a week or 10 days off the Ceftin and do JUST Diflucan? Will the Diflucan work better if I stop the Ceftin a few days? Or will it have the same effect if I take both together daily? (Of course, I am also going to be on anti-yeast diet).

Hi dontlikeliver. I've had years and years worth of candida issues, so I can tell you what worked for me. I have taken nystatin and diflucan and found both not to be the best choices.

The anti-candida program I did was the whole approach program (there's a link on the Lyme and candida page of this website). It's excellent and the most comprehensive protocol out there.

I've always found natural antifungals to be MUCH stronger than their pharmaceutical counterparts. That said, DIET IS KEY, as you already know.

It's the most difficult part of keeping your candida levels low, but it's also the most essential, particularly if you're taking antibiotics.

As far as whether or not you should stop your medication, for what duration etc--I would speak to your doctor about that and see what he/she has to say about it. What I would definitely do is work very hard on your diet and work from there.

Take good care--I hope you find your way through this soon. Candida can be as debilitating as Lymes (when you've had it to the degree that I have).

Ashley

I'm currently in between LLMDs. Old one retired and have not yet seen new one for first visit, which is why I thought I'd ask here as my local GP is totally clueless on Candida and doesn't believe you can have it and still be 'walking' if it's systemic.

Thanks, ashleygait. Diflucan has worked fine for me before, and I'm on Nystatin continually....however, again with bad diet, I'm sure that cancelled out the effect of the Diflucan. I also don't know if I've become resistant.

I guess I was looking for an immediate solution, which would be the drugs whereas natural treatment, which take time, may be what I need to do long-term. And, with the immediate solution (Diflucan for maybe a week or 10 days in a row) I am not sure (and not having access to an LLMD right now) whether it would be best to do with Diflucan and taking a 10 day break from abx (or a week) rather than both at once daily....but, I think I will take a break from the Ceftin and do only Diflucan now for 10 days and stick to diet.

DLL...I thnk that's a good plan. Some people take several weeks off, but that varies from person to person depending upon what stage they are in treatment.

You could also supplement the yeast killing with Pau D'arco tea daily for awhile. I found that the NOW brand tasted better than others.

here is the link ashley mentioned:

Thanks Lymetutu.

In the 'old days' (10-15 years ago) when I was dx'd with CFS and also thought I had Candida, I used the P'au D'arco and various other things, but I wasn't on abx etc, then.

I guess with drugs, expecially Diflucan and some antibiotics, there may be a (dangerous) interaction with some herbals, and without an LLMD right now, I don't know if it's safe.

Do you know of any possible interactions with P'au Darco and other antifungal herbs? Or have you used them, plus Diflucan and abx yourself at the same time?

I have used Pau D' Arco while on abx but probably 12 hours apart. The only one that I know of that is not good to take while on Abx is Olive leaf extract.

Caprylic acid, grapefruit seed extract, Pau D' Arco and oil of orangano I take on a regular basis. They all work well for me.

I recently read a post by someone on ABX , whose doctor advised her to take garlic ( fresh if possible ) at bedtime , so it would have lots of time to clean up the gut while sleeping .

You might add the oil of oregano also at the same time. Sauerkrat , a fermented food also
provides good bacteria. Some brands taste better than others ( I like Bush's Bavarian style ) .

Thank you guys.

I have made a shopping list of a few things non-pharmaceutical to get now, and printed out the Whole Approach pages.

So difficult, cravings are soooooo hard to resist, which of course is the yeast talking I'm sure.

Hi -- I've found the easiest way to get on a nonyeast diet is to do a gradual, stepdown diet, substituting less-bad foods until I make it to the good diet. That is, first give up sugar, but eat fruit since it has fruit sugar. Then after I've handled that transition -- about a week's time, then stop the fruit. Etc.

DLL ~ you've got lots of good advice already but I just wanted to relate my experience. Not that it's the same for anybody else.

I've always found it easier to treat a fungal infection while off ABX. I've had a few doozies. It was the only way I could catch up without creating more trouble. Ok, what I'm trying to say is I think it would be faster and easier.

blah, blah, blah, not a medical anything...

I do hope it clears up really fast.

My LLMD has me on olive leaf extract along with abx. Do you have any websites or studies about not taking olive leaf extract with abx that I could show to my LLMD? I definitely want to discuss this but I had not heard it was a problem.

Thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill,

My LLMD told me that it interferes with absorption of abx.... and to take it away from them. (I probably said it wrong) Didn't mean not to take it at all) He didn't give me any paperwork on it, he told me over the phone.

He also has someone who does alot of research on herbs and effects from them.

I take abx at night and most of my supplements in the morning (so about 8 - 10 hours apart)

I have found that once I get my yeast under control with the Diflucan and abx that taking chewable Acidophilus with Bifidus twice a day helps me maintain. If I start to feel an attack comming on (when I don't maintain my diet), I up my dosage to 4 times a day, and can sometime stop the yeast. I don't know if this will help, but it work okay for me.

Jill,

Here is the warning for Olive leaf:

Q. Are there any none contraindications with The Original Olive Leaf Extract?
A. No contraindications with other drugs have been observed. However, The Original Olive Leaf Extract should not be taken with antibiotics produced from yeast / fungus or along with additional amino acids other than those received in your everyday foods. They might cross out each other's effectiveness.

I messed myself up badly last August with yeast. I had thought I was doing a good job with diet, NOT. I stopped orals for a month but kept on bicillin once every 5 days. I went on diflucan for two weeks and went on a very strict anti yeast diet for the last 5 weeks. The results have been amazing to me. My headaches susbsided, I no longer have stomach issues.

I resumed Zith last week and am now feeling good and strong again. I have no cravings for carbs and I drink Pau D'Arco once a day. I take Nystatin once a day, one Theralac and some standard acidipholus. I am pretty much yeast free and plan to stay that way for the rest of treatment. Cheating fo me is not an option, simply not worth it.

I figure I help my body and my immune system sticking to the anti yeast protocol.

Ceftin was the biggest offender for me.

Eat for a few days nothing but meat & fat and greenbeans & asparagas and take lots of acidophilis triple normal intake of it. NO NO NO sugars. I also would take the acidophilis apart and pour contents in mouth and let disolve thouroghly.

Good luck keep on diflucan and ceftin .Good Luck acidophilis starves yeast out eats what it likes over power yeasts withh acidophilis its totaly natural and works. But dont take acidophilis within 2 hrs of any abx before or after.

ps forgot get some yogurt plain and read it and make sure its not had sugar or easy carbs added then take home and eat with either a couple strawberries chopped up and added to it strawberries are low carb add stevia or another non sugar sweetner to it I add a pinch of vanilla too. eat that 3 times a day for a few days it will help I got rid of my thrush and yeast problem in 3 days completly.

using what I ghave told you about and I didnt have diflucan so I know it works you just have to overwhelm the overwheler yeast starve it out then use the stuff I told you about every other day for yogurt and every day acidopilis 2x a day.
