I am on Ketek, Ceftin and now added Septra ds. My doc added the Septra for Bartonella. I was slighlty hesitant to try Cipro for Bart due to some of the scary side effects so he suggested Septra as an alternative. I don't see much on the board about Septra being good to hit the Bartonella - which I definately have - any thoughts or expereince with it? I will say that the first two days on septra I have had a headache, anxiety, weakness and just not feeling like myself (though who with Lyme feels like themself! :-)).

It's effective against Babs and other protozoa for sure, but I don't think that it is very effective against bart. At least no more than Biaxin or Zith would be. They are all somewhat effective, but as far as taking it down?

Now taking it with Ketek and Ceftin is a different story. It may very well do the job. That sounds like a lot to be taking at the same time. You alredy know that Ketek is a major load on the liver. Septra is also hard on the liver, so be careful, and good luck! How bout a report if it works?

This is what the literature says about it:

"Bacteria of the genus Bartonella are susceptible to many antibiotics when they are grown axenically, including penicillin and cephalosporin compounds, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, macrolide compounds, rifampin, fluoroquinolones, and co-trimoxazole (Bactrim/Septra) (74, 79). However, the in vitro and the in vivo antibiotic susceptibilities of Bartonella do not correlate well for a number of antibiotics; for instance, penicillin has no in vivo efficacy, despite the very low MICs observed in vitro."

I have been using a septra ds/mino pulse for 6 months, in between another combo. The schedule worked out to about one week a month for the septra/mino combo..

I had a NASCAR 500 reaction to the septra, i.e. the mind was going 200 mph, so llmd dropped dose. That was wild!

My symptoms were sporadic both prior and during this phase.

And this was after 9 months of a combo for lyme that may have only arrested bart, since it returned in the spring (after quitting a 6 month ND treatment program for an abx break).

Now, I am going to increase pulse frequency. So I do not know if that means the past few months treatment was just to dribble most away, and now follow it up with a slam dunk. Or, it could mean llmd thought it should have been gone, and if not, will try harder.

Certainly, symptoms were no worse during the last 6 months, but only a tad better.

Hoping liver holds up. I think Spring is my meltdown time, so I will form conclusions about personal effectiveness, then.

Nicolette.

You were on Mino + Rifampin for Bart before. What happened? Didin't it work? Why is he switching you to this combo?
