I've just started takeing Nystatin and I've been having bad stomach cramps, gas and just feeling really full all the time. I'm not even taking as much as my doctor wants me to because of these problems.

Has anyone else had trouble with Nystatin?

Are there any ideas about what I can do?

This isn't the best advice-I am such a chicken and so overloaded with meds to begin with-but I recently started Nystatin suspension which I was supposed to swish around in my mouth for as long as possible and then swallow.

Well, I did the first part-swished it around, and gargled and then SPIT it out. Even with that I was glad when the thrush in my mouth cleared up because Nystatin made me feel sick(er).

I am also taking a vacation from flagyl which seems to have been the one that pushed me over the edge into thrush. Nasty Nystatin-but it did do the trick for my mouth.

Hey ho cobweb...

I'm telling!!!

[Big Grin]

Sandy..

Might I ask... are you taking any acidophulis? If so.. check the ingredients. Make sure it is "milk-free".. even if you aren't allergic to milk. Also be sure it doesn't have the ingredient.. some big LONG word.. initials are FOS.

Either or both of those things can cause the symptoms you describe.

If not..

Contact the doc if this doesn't clear up soon. Check for H. Phylori too.. just in case.

I have always done very well on Nystatin. And I am soooooooo sensitive to ALL things.

But that doesn't mean everyone can take it.

Let us know how you are doing.. ok?

Hi Sandy,

I would suspect that the bloating and gas feeling is from yeast. When you first take antifungals like Nystatin, Diflucan, etc the yeast dieoff will create an increased feeling of bloating. Some get diarrhea, gas, etc.

Nystatin works in the GI tract only to kill the yeast, not systemically. Nystatin is fairly harmless and they even give it to babies for thrush in the mouth.

If you are on antibiotics these can cause the cramping too. I agree with the posters above that taking a probiotic is very, very important. Maybe try some sugar free yogurt too dear.

I just started back on Nystatin and minocycline.

I have been having major herxing (I guess)

I feel sick to my stomach, bloated and overall yucky.

I've only been back on for about 1 week. So I have to wait a bit to see if I start to feel better.

I agree with probiotics, you definitely should be taking some.

For me it is difficult to figure out whether I'm herxing, just plain old sick etc.

I have only been treated for 8 months now.

Hope you feel better soon.

Nystatin has sugar or artificial sweetener in it. Both of which are bad news for folks with Candida or Lyme. Why they put sugar in Nystatin is a mystery to me. It is counter productive!

I have my doctor Rx this if I need nystatin. http://www.paddocklabs.com/nystatin.html
Many folks with HIV use this version because it has no sugar or artificial sweeteners.

If you are getting something other then this exact product you can be sure there is sugar or artificial sweetener in your Nystatin.

Rob, maybe you are flaring from the sugar ..... not herxing. Just a thought.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll contact my doctor and check out pro-biotics. I just want to be able to do all my treatment and I'm afraid that he'll say to skip the Nystaten. I just want to get better.

I had the same problem with Nystatin but was better on Diflucan.
