Hello, A friend of mine has hypothyroid plus a bunch of other weird symptoms. I myself are being treated for Lyme disease and we noticed that we share a lot of the same symptoms.
Now I know that hypothyroid can cause a lot of similar symptoms as lyme disease. The thing is that we now have discovered similar looking bugs under the microscope in her blood as was seen in mine.
The suspection is therefore being turned to lyme disease. During her childhood she used to spend holidays in an area with lots and lots of ticks. So the thought is not completely far-fetched.
Does anyone know the link between lyme and hypothyroid? I know I could do a search, but I am too tired at the moment to do the research. Anyone to point me in the right direction?
thanks! Sig

Once I became infected with lyme, my thyroid did crazy things. I still take syntroid but my hypothyroidism has been much better since treatment. Dr. B talks about this corellation in his guidelines.

I did not have any issues with my thyroid until this year when I started having symptoms of Lyme. My thyroid blood results were normal in Feb 2006, but went whacky last month. My physician says there is a connection between the two.

Lyme does appear to impact the endocrine system. At a recent support group meeting I attended, many people with Lyme mentioned they had lower thyroid levels than normal.

I am not sure if it is this site or another that talks about lyme stressing adrenals (liver/kidney) then when adrenals have to over function, the thyroid slows down to compensate for that. I am too tired also!
My core body temp has increased almost 1 degree since I started taking synthroid. I was 97.2 on average. Now, I often hit 98. Lyme hates heat.... so I think some portion of feeling a little better is from my increased body temp.

I've been sick for years.......surgeon took out 1/2 of my thyroid 4 years ago. With all blood tests, before and after, my thyroid tests came out fine. I'm still sick with lyme.
Sigh.....

When Mg drops (as it does in lyme), Ca (blood level) rises. It is our most abundant mineral to help maintain our pH. Ca is not "thyroid friendly"...so up goes TNF alpha to try to save the thyroid.
Obviously there is an iodine level connection also.
The various nutrients...minerals, vitamins, amino acids have more than one function which really complicates the picture. On top of that, they work together.
This becomes a nutritional nightmare. Bb takes so many pathways...all of which need various nutrients along the way.

I think there is a definite connection. I have been treated for lyme for about 8 years....sick for 15. I was doinf ok but still had shortness of breath and a feeling that I wasn't getting enough oxygen to my heart...especially when going up even a mild hill, squatting and going up stairs was alo a problem. Now, even tho I was low normal on my htyroid tests my doc treated me anyway. That has been one of my biggest improvements. I also don't have to lie down every 15 minutes anymore. My question is...what comes first...the weak thyroid which lowers our immunity and allows the germs to take over or do the microbes attack the thyroid once you already have lyme?
