My bad cholesterol is still up (137) and I think someone said this is a side effect of Lyme. Would someone please explain? Thank you so much!

Is it really YOU? LONG time no see!

Good to hear from you!

From what I remember.. and don't count on that function of mine working 100 percent...

Your body produces cholestrol to protect cells. Having cells attacked by foreign invaders makes the body work harder to produce more cholestrol.

How's that for simple and to the point?

I hope others will come on with more detail.. but right now MY deTAIL is tired.

Happy New Year dear one!

I wish my LDL was only 137! I've read the LDL is high in Lyme because LDL binds to endotoxins and carries them out....so our bodies are trying to help us.

IMO, from all I've read, LDL is only dangerous when oxidized, so if you eat well and take plenty of antioxidants, it is not nearly as dangerous as the drugs they give you to lower it. Google "The Cholesterol Myth" for more info.

I suggest you try Neptune Krill Oil before medication. It has done wonders for my lipids. My LDL dropped from 207 to 154 on the minimum dose of krill oil. It also lowers total cholesterol (mine dropped 44 pts.) and blood sugar (mine dropped 12 pts.).

If you feel you must risk a statin, be sure to take COQ10 in high amts. along with it, since statins deplete this valuable nutrient that is of vital importance to heart function.

Google Dr. Mary Enig...

Judge for yourself if LDL is important.

In my humble opinion I would not sweat it. Higher Cholesterol equals stronger immune system. World average is 240.

When my cholestrol drops below 250 I get worried. Means the immune system is fighting something.. Low cholesterol equals higher cancer risk....

You need natural animal fats to keep body strong. Natural fats fuel the brain, muscles, and immune system...

Bacon and eggs with high grain toast is the best breakfast washed down with (if your tummy likes it) natural milk (stay away from soy. It messes up the Thyroid).

Low fat diets with artifical sweetners will kill you and make the fat cats rich....

Thank you all for responding. When I googled this, I read just what Cave said - the number used to be 130 (considered "normal" )down to 100 this year. I'm NOT going on Lipator, even if the doctor tells me to. Not only me, but most of my family have terrible problems with medication sensetivity. I take fish oil with ....flax and something else, but it's gone up 3 points. I think it's the Lyme, too.But slightly high cholestoral and low blood pressure run in my family, too. I'll keep checking around to see what I can find..........thanks all!love dharma

Hi Dharma,

My Cholesterol is pretty low but my husband has slightly elevated levels. Our doc. recommended using Red Yeast Rice and my husbands cholesterol level dropped 30 points in 2 months. He is taking CoQ10, also.

I wouldn't worry too much.
Red Yeast Rice is the aktive ingredient in Lipitor by the way, but doesn't have the risky side-effects.

Take care,

Sonja

Thank you Sonja! Someone tried to remember what her nurse practitioner said and could only remember "red rice". I'll google it - where did you get yours and what is it? (capsules, powder?)

My daughter the nurse just told me the cholesterol numbers being scaled back were from a lengthly Nurses Review - oh gosh, now I can't remember the organization.......that strongly urged the numbers be dropped to 100 (for the bad cholesterol)

I found lots of capsules and tablets online. I'll probably get it from Vitacost. Price is low (about $14-19, some with coq-10). Thanks again!
