Hi everyone. Im very sensitive to meds but tried to take my very FIRST pill for treatment with a positive outlook.
So im sitting there and im starting to itch here and there. I dont have the welts that i get when i have hives...but i do notice it. Reminds me of when i wear clothes that have been washed in off brand detergent...i get itchy.
Also..my tongue is a bit swollen. Anyhow...
3 questions....
can this happen in less than a 1/2 hour after my first pill?
And....is it same to try and tolerate the itching since i just spent $80 on this prescription or do i need to discontinue already?
Also...is amoxicillin comparable to doxy or is doxy better. I use to tolerate amoxicillin for utis...although...maybe that was just because i didnt have lyme at the time.
The leaflet says itching means an allergic reaction.....so im guessing that is dangerous. I dont know what to do....I feel like my body is gonna have one issue or another with everything out there. I dont wanna keep experimenting and paying for various drugs.
Thanks so much

Get your hands on some antihistimine right away! If you get worse, go to ER. NOT to fool around with.
However, if the itching gets better with antihistimine (like Benedryl or hydroxizine) you may be able to takes ABX and tolerate it.
The antihistimine will make you very sleepy. They would give you that in a shot at the hospital. I have same problem and am not on ABX yet
so I have some Hydroxyzine on hand when I do go on them. Some people are just very sensitive to some antibiotics and some to all of them.
Hope you don't have more problems with them!
My best to you, Janet

Janet is right on. You need to watch these very closely. I actually had a reaction the same time on IV Rocephin, Mino, Tindamax and Rifampin. My throat swelled, I had trouble talking more trouble swallowing, etc..
I went to the ER and they eventually injected 5000g of Benadryl. I got loopy, silly and then exhausted. Within 2-3 hours swelling was mostly gone and we moved on. That only happened once.
The reactions can happen that quick depending on your bacteria load and Doxy (which I'm on now) does the same thing to me. I have really deep itches/tingles through my head/neck and sometimes chest.
It comes and goes. I take nothing for it and I guess just deal with it, but it doesn't last long. I know it's different for everyone
Most likely, in my experience of treating co-infections with Lyme, these are just herxheimer reactions as the bacteria is dying off or just on the move to hide. Then it could also be just toxins from the dying bacteria released that you body has to work out through the liver.
Keep the hands moving and take many deep breaths. Another helpful tool to remove toxins, clean the liver and actually kill bacteria in it's elementary state (prior to cyst form) is NAC.
You can get this at any GNC store and possibly at your local market. In case you don't know this. Start with 600 mg/day and then 1200 mg/day and then up to 2400 mg/day. Only titrate up as your body learns to tolerate it.
Otherwise my Lyme doc just said to use Milk Thistle for the same purpose.
Let me know if there are questions. Best Regards and Luck, Karl

thank you both. i also have that need to take deep breaths on it. i feel like i want to ride it out though as best i can. I just dont want to putmyself at risk either. ill try my 2nd pill today.
Anyone know if amoxicillin is as good as doxy??? i use to take that for uti's and i tolerated it. But, maybe i tolerated it cuz i didnt have lyme at the time. lol

I had the deep breath catch up issue early on so I know it wasn't from the doxy. I almost think it is simply a symptom of the Lyme, not an antibiotic reaction. Could be wrong but that is my feeling....but you did say it just happened after taking the doxy for the first time....hmmm so it does sound like an antibiotic issue....which in both cases can be caused by different antibiotics....
Ugh, sorry for thinking out loud. So many unknowns.
I don't know about amoxicillin but only hear about Doxy, so I might think it is better.
Sorry if this didn't help. Best Regards, Karl

I have the need to take deep breaths quite a lot (air hunger) and I haven't started taking ABX yet. I believe it is a symptom of lyme infection
and possibly coinfections. I have tested positive for BB and Mycoplasma. I'm trying to get used to a Bi-Pap machine for a sleep disorder but
I haven't gotten through a night without jerking the headgear off, sometimes in my sleep, because I feel like I am strangling. I can get air hunger just from walking to the bathroom or the mailbox.
Some days it is worse than others. But I seem to have an episode at least 5-10 times a day.
My best to you, Janet
