Personally, I like Essential Formulas.

We were instructed our son should take 5 capsules(!) one hour before (2) meals (breakfast and dinner) with a full glass of water for 1 week...then maintenance doses.

This will use up a full box which runs about $60.

But it saved my son's life!!! He TESTED virtually NO BENEFICIAL bacteria left in his system.

(Food poisoning followed by appendectomy and then abx. destroyed nearly all of his "good guys"!)

The "turn-around" in one week was amazing. Honest.

I have found Theralac and Pharmax to be good potent probiotics. I would recommened making your own yogurt and kefir. That way you know for sure that you are getting good viable bacteria.

I second the 'yogurt and kefir' recommendation. You can just use a good natural plain yogurt to 'start' a new batch of yogurt (most cookbooks have the instructions, or look online for what temperature to culture it at), or you can buy cultures to make the yogurt and kefir:

http://www.lyo-san.ca/english/yogourmet.html (available through some health food stores)

or even better: http://www.gemcultures.com/

Be aware that kefir contains a beneficial yeast; I don't know what the experience has been of people allergic to molds/yeasts who've taken this drink, but it does contain yeast. In a good way...

I take many different probiotics.
Loads of people recommend Theralac, but I can't get it here in the U.K.

I use about 4-5 different probiotics, I also bought some Kefir, I had never heard of it before, so it's strange you guys should mention it. I just spotted it while buying Theelac and though I would give it a try - I haven't got round to making it yet though.

I tested positive for Candida on a stool sample, so I am taking Garlic, Caprylic acid, Threelac, tons of probiotics, and might add Nystatin.

Other 'food' probiotics include
-nonpasteurised sauerkraut (it's fairly easy to make your own out of various veggies, and that can be SO good. Instructions for kimchee (korean kraut) are slightly easily than for traditional kraut)

-rejuvelac
Rejuvelac is a liquid made from slightly fermented sprouts (it looks like water and tastes kinda like vinegar). I can buy it on the West Coast in health food stores or you can make your own. I find that rejuvelac worked a LOT better for me than any purchased probiotic supplements.

Solaray Multidophilus 12 in enteric coated capsules. The enteric coating helps more good bacteria get to the gut. Non-enteric coated types do nothing for me.

The cheapest I have found that works well for me are the probiotics pearls at vitacost.com. They are $25 for 90 of them. I have also seen them recently at walmart- a little less exspensive.

The most expensive but works really well is theralac hands down. If you buy 2 bottle the shipping is free. www.theralac.com

The third one I like is USA DDS Acidophilus Plus w/Fos I get from vitacost also. Not too expensive at $12 for 100 of them.

And 4th is Kyolic Dophilus acidophius which I open & sprinkle on my tongue every time I brush my teeth and or use mouthwash . This has kept the thrush down alot.

hope this helps [Smile]

Hello all,

I've only used plain yogurt with meals and Acidophilus Probiotic (Lactobacillus Acidophilus)

Nature's Bounty 100 capsules for $7.49. The capsules are only 10 mg each and I take 10 each day. 5 with breakfast and 5 with dinner. I don't recommend the flavored ones as they have other additives in them. Not needed.

When I started the antis I would only take one/day. My LLMD straightened me out after he called me a cowboy and an alien for being able to take the amounts of antis I was then on. Good Norwegian/Polish guts, I guess...

All the best, Karl

hi karl1

I hope I don't offend but you may want to re-think taking your pro-biotics with meals.

When you eat your GB & stomach release alot of acid to break down the food & kill off alot of the pro-bitics. They are very fragile.

I have read 1 hour before meals or at bedtime.

blessings,
Dana

Dana,

Thanks for the info! There's so much out there to know, ugh. I hope the yogurt helped boost something, then. No offense taken. So much to learn, too.

Sincerely,
Karl

I take Theralac at bedtime. It's great! When my insurance denied a rx for Diflucan I doubled up on Theralac for a few weeks and the problem was solved. [Big Grin]

Of course, you need to eat a good low carb diet, along with any probiotic to keep the yeast at bay. [Smile]
