This probably sounds crazy, but I've noticed that whenever I up the dose of my antibiotics---and I start to herx---I become very sensitive to sugars. If I eat any fruit, or sweets, or even eating bread (which has small amounts of sugar), within about 1 hour I begin to feel horrible. My heartrate goes up, and my blood-pressure begins to fluctuate wildly.
I'm really worried, because right now I can barely eat anything...only meat and a few veggies really, and I'm losing too much weight.
Has anyone had anything like this happen to them? Do you know if any ways to lessen the sensitivity (other than time)? Do you know why the sugar is causing such a severe reaction? because it doesn't make much sense to me, and my doctor is stumped as well.
Thanks,
Lauren

Sugar is an immune suppressant. It also feeds the bad bacterias and cancer. Sugar is just not good for anyone at any time, but especially not for those of us who are sick.
Your reaction may be a blessing in disquise. If everytime you eat sugar you feel worse, it will make giving up sugar much easier.
Eating lean meats and veggies is a better alternative. Diets are different for each of us though depending on our chemistry and possible food allergies. Sugar, however, is consistently bad for everyone....period.
Eat nuts for calories. They are very nutritious provided you don't eat the ones doctored up with smoked, honeyed, etc flavorings.
I hope you do not have an allergy to nuts...sigh.

it could be your adrenals.
Herxing is hard on the adrenals, especially if you are herxing all the time, or alot of the time for extended periods of time.
If you are not as sensitive to the sugar reactions when you are not herxing, maybe it is your adrenals.
Maybe your body cannot tolerate the herxing that you are having with the higher dose of antibiotics.
Some things to think about.
OR maybe you are just too sick right now, and you need to be careful with your adrenals, and not eat anything that makes them depleted or are hard on them.

Thanks guys for suggesting the glucose intolerance/adrenal problems. I'll get some blood drawn when I see my doctor later this week.
Lymeflox, I was on zith, 250eod. But recently increased to 250 every day. Today my doctor told me to cut back to the original dose, so now I'm technically back on 250eod. I've heard zith can cause bad herxes...but what I'm going through is a little exteme Posts: 22 | From Maryland | Registered: Dec 2006

Dear Lauren,
I've had high sugar issues with Lyme. When I feel my worst, my sugars are usually the highest.
They are higher when I herx, have my period, run a fever, etc.
From what I have read, chronic illness is a leading contributor to non-insulin diabetes and people with diabetes have higher blood sugar levels when they are sick.
I have done real well with eliminating carbs and most simple sugars from my diet.
I do well with whole wheat pastas, brown rice, etc. Even though the carbs are high, so is the fiber.
I've lost weight but look better for it. I feel better too. Plus I am not feeding the yeast.
Atkins has some high protein breakfast bars with minimal carbs and sugar. They are pretty good.
There are some carb and sugar free protein drinks as well on the market.
I snack on almonds all the time. It really keeps me feeling full.
I am not a nurse, but I do have a blood glucose monitor and have tracked my sugar levels.
By the way, prior to Lyme, I had no issues with high blood sugar. I used to drink 2-4 cokes a day.
Lyme has changed that. I believe due to the stress on my system.
I also try to walk 30 min, 5 x a wk. This helps my sugar levels also.
Good luck.

I just wanted to update this thread real quick. I spoke with my doctor today and she thinks my insulin is spiking whenever I eat, causing my blood-sugar to crash. We've gone back to my original dose of Zithromax, and I have a phone consult with my llmd tomorrow to see if he knows of any precident for this.
I wanted to ask though, has anyone here heard of insulin spikes during a herx? Is there any literature you could point me to?
Thanks,
Lauren

For some stupid reason I went on a hot cocoa kick not too long ago. During that week I had the worst neuro flares I've had yet.
It was very frightening. The best way I could describe the feelimg was if I had WAY too much alcohol. After a couple of days, I remembered that the spirochetes ferment the sugars into ethyl alcohol and realized it was the cocoa.
I'm consciously avoiding sugar now.

I just wanted to post another update, in case anyone in the future has the same symptoms.
I talked with my LLMD today, and he and my PCP both agree that I'm experienceing reactive hypoglycemia. I've been temporarily taken off my antibiotics, and will get a PICC line later this week so I can recieve TPN (IV nutrition) if things continue as they are.
Right now I'm unable to eat most foods without becoming severly nauseous and tachycardic within 1-2 hours after eating. The only solids I've been okay with are diabetic nutrtition bars, if I eat them slowly.
Anyway, my LLMD thinks this is all a very strange reaction to the antibiotics. His theory is my adrenal glands have become effected by the herxheimer reaction, and have started to overproduce insulin after I eat, causing my blood-sugar to crash.
I hope no one else has to go through this, but at least this post is here, so maybe it'll help someone in the future who's in my situation.
Thanks all for your suggestions and comments!
-Lauren
