I love the stuff. My general MD who practices mainly alternative medicine said I can take as much as 800 mg a day in 4 divided doses. Apparently it is a precurser to serotonin. So it acts a little like an antidepressant. Also helps with autonomic nervous system problems. I have lots of autonomic sensitivities.

Also helps with sleep, carb cravings and many other things.

I love the stuff too.Dont use it if your on an ssri though.I have tried the NOW brand and it isnt to good.I use the brand douglas labs and it good.It helps with sleep and if you have anxiety or your brain is wired.I also use theonine which is just as good to me and doesnt upset your stomache.I also use Somnolin wich is a tablet that has both the theonine and 5htp in it,puts me to sleep pretty well. Both are amino acids I believe. The only problem is they only last for a couple of hours so I take them throughout the day or when they where out and you wake up.Ive tried zoloft and didnt like it,i will take this anyday. No side effects that i can see.The two have really helped the quality of my life.I can feel them calm things down 10 minutes after I take them.

Joseph,

Just curious, how much 5-HTP do you generally take in a day? Divided doses? I have never heard of Somnolin - will have to check that out. Where do you get it?

Thanks!

I take it as i feel I need it.On average I probably take between 200 to 400mg of 5htp spread out throughout the day.I also probably take about 300 to 400 mg of theonine a day.The somnolin I get from my doc but its made by metagenics. The somnolin is a buck a tablet but its worth it at bedtime. The somnolin is 200 mg of 5htp plus 200mg of theonine. The theonine and the 5htp work exactly the same to me,same results. The theonine is cheaper, make sure it says it has suntheonie.i get that from the health food store. My 5htp from douglass labs I get from my doc, never seen my brand in the healthfood store.
