I was amused & intrigued when I saw our LLMD get out a tuning fork-like instrument and put it against the inside of my son's ankles.
He asked my son to tell him when he felt the vibration go away. The vibration seemed to last about 30 seconds.
Also, he thumped our heads, on the bone just in front of our ears (TMJ?)...and asked if we felt anything inside our head. My daughter immediately felt a buzzing sensation that traveled through her head.
What in the world was he looking for????

Nerve conduction, hyper/hypo sensitivity, differences in conductivity between sides of body? The tuning form emits a vibration, and I am guessing it is a certain frequency related to the nerve conduction properties of the body.
Sort of like when they rap your knee and see the response.
Yes, that freaked me out, too! One side, when he put it on the ankle, I felt it zip up my leg and then up my spine. Stunned me, so I doubt if I gave an accurate response to the second leg!

what he did was part of a good neuro exam actually i believe
having been through many and not just w/ LLMDs
looking for sensory loss--at least w/ the tuning fork...
i think he sounds thorough

I'm glad to know he wasn't doing some hocus-pocus medicine.
He wasn't one I thought would do something weird, so this really struck me as funny.

Even the most mainstream of neurologists have done the tuning fork stuff on me, pre-Lyme and now with Lyme.
As mentioned, it has to do with nerve conduction.
