My daughter, who is being treated for Lyme is experiencing a strange symptom.
On her left foot three of her toes hurt. It's the big, middle and pinky toe. The other two toes are fine and the toes on her other foot are also fine. But these three specific toes are swollen and red. When she showers they get really bright red (the comparison to her normal colored other toes is shocking)and they itch and burn.
I'm thinking I would try some antifungal cream on her toes but I duobt this is a fungal problem. It's just soo odd how it's only every other toe. Also she says the pain seems more inside the toe and to me it seems the swelling is what's causing the burning and itching. But of course, I don't know.
I will bring this up to her doctor next time we see him but until then, any ideas, suggestions?

Just to let you know that when I herx, my big toe becomes very sore. It does not swell but it feels as if a cement block has been sitting on it. The symptom is worse when I wake up in the morning.
I used to regularly get an itchy and red palm and that may have been Lyme but that was before I knew anything about Lyme.
One of my friends's daughters had awful soreness in her heels.

That's really interesting.My daughter did say about a week ago (before the pain started) that she felt as though there were rubber bands wrapped around those toes, then they went numb. Weird sensations. Maybe it is patr of herxxing?
Her friends always think she's funny to hang uot with because she always has these odd things happening.... Oh well... at least they find her amusing...

I developed pseudo-gout with Lyme disease. It manifested itself in the joint of the big toe - sore and inflamed. Alkalanizing your body can reduce gout - it has done wonders for me.

gwen, you told her what i was going to suggest!
gout .... too much uric acid in body; dad has this terrible; his whole body.
his hands were so bad; they looked like rheumatoid arthritis; all crippled up on.
dad couldn't walk when gout was in his feet. he's come downstairs on his butt down our many steps! they put him on PREGNIZONE for 1 week. good luck! it's very painful.

Mine was not gout. I actually ave low uric acid levels.

Does anyone's toes (especially big toe, but not limited to that) curl under at times and becomes very painful when they do that?

MY TOES USED TO HURT SO BAD THAT I HAD TO PUT SOCKS BETWEEN THEM SO THEY WOULDN'T TOUCH EACH OTHER JUST TO SLEEP. IT WOULD DRIVE YOU CRAZY. DR. PUT ME ON RIFAMPIN FOR BART(I TESTED NEG. FOR CO-INFECTIONS) BUT SAID THAT WAS LIKELY THE REASON FOR THE FOOT PAIN. 2 MONTHS ON RIFAMPIN AND FEET ARE MUCH BETTER. GOOD LUCK

I had this as a problem 3-4 years ago - long before a Lyme dx. Interesting to think it might be associated with my Lyme, though.
They called it cellulitis, gout, unusual presentation of athlete's foot. I took Lamisil for about 2 weeks and it did go away, though the affected toes still don't look like the others.
I wonder if it is some kind of fungal overgrowth that happens because of the Lyme messing with our body's chemical makeup and immune system response.

I had this symptom for ten years pre my lyme REALLY showing its self off. It was always just my big toe on my left foot- numb, but yet it hurt.
Since being treated, Ive only ever had this a few times.
There is another type of person this is very very common in- former track runners. Is she one by chance? Its very common to ruin the nerves in the toes if you run track. for years, thats what I thought happened to me.... little did I know. But just throwing that out there.

No she's not a track runner. She played other sports but not track.

Well, her whole toe turns red but there are redder spots also. And these spots seem to be more painful.
