My non-lyme doctor wants me to start physical therapy. I did a lot of therapy a year a go, it was torture. This was before I found out that I had lyme. I've been really sick the last 21/2 years and have been mostly in bed. Now that I know I have lyme I would like to at lest get started on the treatment before I try physical therapy again. I had my first appointment last week and just from him moving my legs, hips and arms and from him testing my strength I had tremendous burning pain in my joints. This week he wants me to start on some light arobis. I don't think I'm ready for this. He has DR. Bs protocol for doing P.T.

What has your experence been?

Do you think PT is good for people that have Lyme if it causes so much pain after?

sorry the p.t. is causiung you so much more pain. please know this is only my experience, and hopefully more people will share theirs soon, i went to p.t. for 2 years, 3 x week, both before i was diagnosed and after.

it was actually due to my spending 7 mo. in p.t. and showing NO improvement that i was finally directed to the right dr.

i have stayed with it, and yes it does hurt like the devil most days, but i have found that i hurt like that even if i do not do p.t.,

however, because it was so expensive, i joined a gym last year and do the same exercises on my own now. i force myself to go 5 days a wk. i truly believe that this is the reason i now use a cane instead of the walker.

the best advise i have is, you know your body, and you will be able to tell when it is just too much and when you need to stop for the day. try to listen to the pain, as for me, i can tell when it is pain because i did too much and when it is just my normal hell.

also, make sure you use the cold and heat packs they should tell you to use, they do help with the pain from the p.t.

hope this helps, but again, this is just my experience.

Maybe you need a different physical therapist this time.

PT helped me, but I had a GREAT one. As my Lyme treatment progressed, the PT could REALLY tell a difference in my muscle tone.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I went to physical therapy every year for my unknown condition(ie Lyme). It never worked.

Then I put myself in a pool to see if I could get myself to move, and little by little, I stretched out all the tight muscles. It is the only therapy that works for me.

I wear a torso float to hold me up, and a snorkle and mask so I can breathe under water. Then I go to with all the stretches, as well as do gentle swimming back and forth to stay warmer.

I needed PT because I had severe pain from tight muscles. I was only able to tolerate the PT after starting Flexeril. It's a muscle relaxer. Before that, I had no progress for months in PT.

It is also important to work with a very good therapist. If they give you exercises and leave yuo alone to do them, then it's not a good therapist.

I needed months of hands on work before I got to the point of doing anything besides light stretching on my own.

I am confused that this therapist is having you start aerobics, if he has Dr. B's guidelines. Dr. B clearly says no aerobics when first starting.

Aniec you said,

"I am confused that this therapist is having you start aerobics, if he has Dr. B's guidelines. Dr. B clearly says no aerobics when first starting."

This confuses me too.

I'm on temporary disability and so I have to do what my doctors tell me to do or I could loose my disability [Frown] Other wise I wouldn't be doing PT yet. I'm so fruserated!!! I"m going to try to only have him give me stretching excercizes for now.

I hate it when doctors/therapists think they know our bodies better then we do. We're the ones that live with ourselves and I think it makes good since to let us have some imput. Well, I'm off to my appointment, wish me luck.

I hope it's not going to be one of these appointments [puke] I don't feel like I can take it right now.
