My son is on bactrim for the first time in his life (checked for alllergy & none found) to treat babesiosis. I have encouraged him to eat when taking this and to also drink plenty of water throughout the day. He is especially nauseous (sp) today.

What do you suggest he take for this?

I've had lots of problems with nausea. Sometimes fresh ginger will help. Sometimes I have to break down and have zantac (not within 2 hours of the antibiotic),

Nutritionalist also recommended more oil with food when taking meds (olive oil).

I at times have milk. But honestly sometimes nothing help. [Frown]

Take the meds with food. Ranitidine (acid blocker) can help if the stomach is now irritated, but new findings say not to take it long with abx. Mastic Gum helps me some. Phenergan (an rx) can block the nausea symptoms.

I second the vote for ginger. It's been a lifesaver for me for years. Try fresh ginger grated into hot water for tea, or ginger candy from the store, or ginger herbal tea.

I use ginger tea when I'm nauseous. I also find yogurt helps for some nausea.

I've been on Bactrim as well these past 2 weeks with lots of nausea and intermittent vomiting. Tried the crackers and the other suggestions but ended up getting a prescription from my LLMD for compazine. Works great! Now I take one an hour before my bactrim is due and have absolutely no nausea anymore.

At times, I have found red rasberry tincture to really help nausea, especially that kind of nausea that feels like someone is trying to pull your stomach out of your head through your middle ear with a lopsided gyroscope.

Also ginger is great. If my nausea gets really really bad, I end up taking several charcoal pills. The downside is that negates whatever medication is in my stomach, but the upside is that it usually stops the nausea within minutes.

Cheers,

Alison

Nausea is the worst, I am so sorry your son is going threw this [Frown] The babs treatment was the last straw for my tummy-which held out like a trooper for 3 years on orals. But the treatment for babs did get rid of my low grade fevers for now knock on wood.

Two rx's helped me the most at my worst-promethazine genergic rx or brand name phenegran(sp?)
And liquid carafate. Carafate can only be at least 2 hours away from meds. Great for before be when the tummy is empty for so long and is supposed to coat the stomach.

Potatoe chips & sour cream a glass of milk for some unknown reason. Not the healthiest I know but it did help.

Ginger & peppermint gum helped me a little. But did not hold back the worst of it.

Been drinking alot of chamaille tea. Also helps.

In the end very low dose of doxipin at bedtime cut the nausea in 1/2 for now.

hope he can feel better soon [group hug]

Blessings
Dana

none of this is medical advise-just my 2 cents.

Make tea with fresh ginger root from the health food store. Add 2 Tbs of Aloe Juice to a cup of tea. The two ingredients together have a synergystic effect.

This is one of the best natural cures for stomach upset. Both have a positive effect alone, but together they are super-healing. Got this idea from an acupuncturist / herbalist.

Hope this helps,
robi

When I first started several different antibiotics for lyme, I would get sick to my stomach.

Even though I had been on most of these before, it was never such a high dosage or so many at once.

I didn't know what to do-I tried more antibiotics for nausea and tea's etc. But nothing really worked.

Until I started researching alternative cures to everyday problems.

problem:Upset stomach
solution: peppermints

I know it sounds silly, but peppermint actually helps with digestion and it's very calming to the stomach. My nausea usually came on about 30 minutes after I took my meds. It was Christmas time and I was at my bestfriends house for a dinner. I asked her to bring me a peppermint-so I got a candycane.

Within 20 minutes I felt totally fine. Ever since I have always carried around peppermints and I swear it makes me feel better. Obviously, don't let your son go crazy, since it has so much sugar-but it's a simple solution to a problem we all face.

You can try ginger and tea's-don't limit yourself-but this is what worked for me.

I was on bedrest for 7 months with my first daughter and had a host of complications including extreme nausea. WHat was advised>? Yup, ginger tea, but that only did a little for me and so what my gyno told me to do was... and this is not a joke.. eat salty potato chips!!!!

It worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ate lots of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And they were doctor prescribed*)*!)!
Best wishes,
Sarah

My son has also been on abx for 3 years. He took a 4 month break after Dr. B. closed and did detox with a homeopathic doctor before seeing his new llmd. He never has had nausea problems.

I expect he will grin when I forward him the salty potato chip suggestions and he loves peppermint. I would like to avoid another medication if possible but he is ambitious and has enrolled in 9 credits this semester so we will do what we have to.

Acupuncture helps with nausea for chemo patients. I'm not sure if it gets rid of immediate nausea or has a lasting effect. But it's worth looking into.

And this is one of the teas I use for nausea:

Celestial Seasonings makes a Honey Peach Ginger Tea. It's part of their Wellness Tea line, which comes in smaller cube boxes.

Among it's ingredients are ginger, mint and chamomile. The ginger taste is very strong.
