Has anyone else had difficulty tolerating sarsaparilla?

I know when I added it to the core protocol, I was struck by the smell and taste, neither of which I liked. My stomach tends to be very sensitive to smells and tastes.

I started Buhner's core protocol a month ago and progressively increased the dose w/o any significant problems. Then upon reading that sarsaparilla would reduce or eliminate the herx, decided to add it.

I seemed to tolerate it ok at first. After I'd gone through a whole bottle of 100 caps over about12 days, I started to get a little queasy stomach, and in a couple more days had outright runs.

I stopped all my herbs for a day, but not my abx, and my stomach started to get back to normal. Then I took another dose of just the core protocol and seemed ok. That evening (last night) I took only 3 sarsaparilla caps, and my stomach started making funny sounds again.

This morning I took another dose of the core protocol only, and shortly after my stomach started hurting and off I had to run to the VC.

I guess I'll go off herbs again for a day or so to let my stomach rest, then just try the core protocol and see if I tolerate that.

Does anyone have any toughts?

All I can tell you about sarsaparilla is that I tried drinking it as tea. I don't tolerate herbs in capsule form real well, so thought the tea might be an alternative.

I drank it about 7 in the morning, and was totally nauseated until noon. No GI reactions other than the nausea, but it was only 1 mug of tea.

This might explain why the tea was hard to find, and I had to special order it from my health food store guy. [puke]

Sarsaparilla is actually supposed to be good for dysentery. However LARGE doses can cause intestinal upset.

Maybe for YOU, what you are taking IS a large dose.

Try a smaller amount for a week or so, maybe only one pill a day, and see what happens. Also, I find that C-Salts HELPED my stomach.

I still get a little queeziness once in awhile, but I haven't attributed it to Sarsaparilla. I get real bad pain and nausea from ABX.

Do you take it with your meal. I take ALl my herbs in between the main meal and dessert.

I had a reaction to it too. I was very disappointed because I really needed it for detox. My body seems to fight me at every turn!

Psano--

I have had to learn by trial and error that I tolerate most things in much smaller doses than most. This applies to antibiotics, herbs, supplements, etc. I found that I was still getting better when taking smaller doses of abx that my LLMD prescribed.

When I told him this, he was fine with it because I was always making progress. When I made the switch to herbs after a year of abx, this same seemed to apply again.

I always made progress, in fact, much better progress with the herbs when I slowed down and listened carefully to my body. They are powerful and perhaps you don't need as much. I even asked Buhner on planet thrive and he basically said that lower doses are fine.

Hope that helps. I find the herbal protocol so valuable, I wish you luck with it.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I think I'll give my stomach another day off, and then will restart at a much lower dose. I think you're right, that maybe I don't need the full dosage he talked about in his book. I AM fairly petite.

FWIW, I haven't taken any herbs since yesterday am, but did take my scheduled abx, and my stomach is fine now, but I've been herxing more, and that's a drag...eyes drooping, brain fatigue, body fatigue...all enough to keep me from wanting to exercise.

I just want to lie down, close my eyes, and rest my brain.

I have tested it on people using ART and have seen it come up as energetically blocking people and have then had them stop taking it.
