OK, so I'm starting on the yellow paint on Monday when my pharmacy can get it in for me. Will any fat do when I take the Mepron - flax oil, coconut oil, olive oil, butter, whatever? Are some better than others?

Does this stuff taste like death? What do I need to know about this so I'm prepared?

I'll also be restarting on zith 250mg twice daily in addition to Mepron 1 tsp. twice daily. Is starting with 2 tsp. daily a lot?

Thanks for any info!

It's not that bad! Taste like banana alcohol or something. Take it with any of those fats! Just as long as you take it with some fat so it's absorbed well. [Smile]
Happy yellow painting!
It made a huge difference for me!
2 teaspoons is the starting dose, and it is usually raised to 4 teaspoons per day. Why is the zithromax dose so tiny? I took 1,200 mg of zithromax with 4 tsp of mepron!

Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like I can live with the taste.

The zith is what the LLMD prescribed. Before I started Flagyl 750mg daily about 2 months ago, I was taking doxy 300mg and zith 500mg daily for 3 months and did nicely on that. Maybe he'll ramp it up next month.

He's concerned that I'm relapsing babs, so he's going after that right now. I had taken art for 3 months and gotten rid of all babs sx, but since starting Flagyl and dropping the art, the sx are slowly returning.

Thanks for the input!

I think the Mepron tastes pretty good...make sure you shake it well and be careful pouring it. I always took mine with a tablespoon of peanut butter...worked fine! That, along with the Zith and Artemisinin caused all of my symptoms to go away...

WildCondor...I think I should have taken the strength that you did...cuz my lyme/Babs is slowly creeping back. How long were you on that combo and strength for?

I wouldn't say it tastes completely delightful...but it's not too bad. I would take it with ice cream! (good excuse for a treat!) And definitely take it with fat, 'cause it is NO fun on your stomach. I would literally take a bite of ice cream, a spoon of Mepron, and another bite of ice cream. Be careful about stepping up the dosage appropriately because it can really stir things up. Good luck!

Am I the only one who thought it tasted terrible?! ...Definitely not on my list of favorites - but it made me feel better, so it was worth it.

I took it with peanut butter, too, sometimes - pretty much any fats except almond butter (almonds block the absorption of fat, I think). 20 grams of fat with each dose, ugh - but I wanted to make every drop count.

On another recent thread, someone mentioned MCT oil as a good fat to take with mepron - you might check that out, sounded interesting.

Check out the Mepron Buddies thread, too! (Sorry I don't know how to make a link - just do a quick search!)

My daughter took her first dose today. She is staying at 500mg zith and two tsp mepron for a month.

I almost choked when I heard it's $1250 without insurance. Does all your insurances cover it?
She will be dropped from our Aetna at the end of the month and go on our state health plan.

I am praying they will cover it.

She said it didn't taste horrible. And a tsp isn't much. She took it in a syringe, and peanut butter and crackers.

I've run it through the drug pricing thingie at my healthcare website and it appears that they'll cover it for a $35 a month copay. We'll see what happens when I go to pick it up at the pharmacy on Monday.

Good to know it doesn't taste as awful as all that. I just don't do so well with bitter tastes - got a taste of diflucan the other day when I didn't swallow fast enough! [Eek!] Sounds like I'll be OK with this.

Thanks for the thought about the Mepron buddies thread. I'll pull it up in a minute and look it over.

How much is 20 grams? Should I weigh whatever fat I choose with my digital scale? I try not to eat peanut butter because of the mold/yeast issue. Since I'm dropping diflucan I'm going back on the stricter anti-yeast diet again. [Frown] Oh, well - the candy was fun while it lasted... [Wink]

Hi!

Well originally it was only 2 teaspoons of mepron per day with 600 mg of zithromax for 4 months. The babesia came back, and i was then treated with 4 teaspoons/day and 1,200 mg Zithromax for 3-4 months and it never came back! [Smile] I think I took artemesia with the Mep/Zith the second time too, worked great!

Peanut butter is a good one, I always used avocados or some meat/fish or a scoop of fatty ice cream..ha haa

My patient insert actually said to take 20 grams with each dose. Once you choose what type of fat you're using, check the label or look it up online to see how much to take.

Kelly - My ins. didn't cover it all - but a good percentage of it.

There was a program to help cover the cost, last year - might still be available. It was called Bridges to Access.

Silly me, still can't get a link attached, but I know groovy2, Jay, posted about it. I'll see if I can find it and bump it up.

I know malarone is similar to mepron, but I didn't see any direction about taking it with fats. How much fat do you nee with malarone?
My LLMD said malarone is better for WA-1.

Shoney,

The malarone should be taken with food or milk. I take mine with peanut butter.

Hugs,

Geneal

Jason, you might want to post that question separately to get more replies.

My LLMD seems to think that Malarone is the best treatment.

Obviously, other LLMD's prefer and prescribe Mepron.

Who knows?

Some members here call malarone

I was hoping someone would suggest taking the mepron/malarone with a reeses peanut butter cup!

Darn!!!!

Hugs,

Geneal

Dolphinlady, that's funny, my LLMD specifically recommended almond butter. [confused]

I use coconut oil unless the food I'm eating is naturally fatty. I always eat it with a meal. I started out on two tsp. twice daily with no problems, but I never seem to need to ramp up with meds. I would go by your past history whether or not you can start with the full dose.

Cactus, I think it tasted hideous, too. I'm used to it now, though, it doesn't bother me at all anymore.
