Is anyone taking milk thistle?

Does it help or will it cause something similar to the "herx" reaction?

I dont have any real way of detoxing! [rant]

It will help protect your liver while on abx. I never had a herx on it.

Be sure to take it one hour before or two hours after your abx.

Ditto to what Lymetoo said!

I was wondering if it IS taken with certain meds....does it enhance their effects or decrease their effects??

Pergolide mesylate??

Would a pharmacist know about milk thistle?

I like milk thistle. It's my friend.

I use the liquid extract... cause I am sick of pills pills pills! And I can "drop" it in any drink unnoticed.

But YES.. it can cause a herx like feeling. A flu-like feeling of sorts. Or in other words... a CRUMMY feeling!

As it cleans up your liver it dumps the garbage back into your blood stream.. causing your body to stop and say..

HEY!!! WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT???

NOT a fun deal either. I started out too fast and learned not to do that again! OUCH! Once I went slowly.. I was better.. and felt good.

I am talking slow.. instead of the 20 drops a day suggested, I had to do ONE a day to keep from having that herxy feeling. It took me 18 months to build up to the 20.

Good luck!!!

Ultrathistle (milk thistle product that is easier to absorb)

Further Liver/Gut support:

Digestive enzymes are a must especially if there are questions about food alergies or if diet restrictions are inconsistent -- open and sprinkle on every meal.
(Dr. K. favorites are Houston Neutraceuticals Zyme Prime and AFP Peptizyde)

Hepatica

Dandelion Root

Castor oil packs over the liver with heat for 20 minutes daily. (I used to put it on overnight.)
Do not use heating pad (EMF); get/sew yourself a little sack, fill with rice, heat in microwave for a minute or two. Careful, it can get too hot.)

Castor oil pack: old cotton undershirt, cut two pieces about 5x8". Dribble a few drops of castor oil, preferably organic, on one cotton piece. Put on liver area - right-hand side chest area above and below last rib. Put other dry cotton piece over that.
Add a layer of saran to keep oil from getting all over. Secure with some medical tape. Lay warm rice pad over it and leave on until it bugs you!
20 minutes okay.

Coffee enemas (not on very young children)

Ensuring regular bowel movements by upping magnesium and Vitamin C to tolerance. An absolute must.

Beta Glucan and Original probiotic by BioImmersion.

Take care.

I may be wrong, but I thought milk thistle with malarone or mepron was a no-no.

Doesn't it lower the efficacy of these meds?

Hugs,

I believe that milk thistle helps you liver clear your system of the drugs. Therefore, I believe that if you are taking drugs because you need them to build up in your system to kill bugs it doesn't necessarily make sense to also take milk thistle and clear your system of the drugs. If you are on a drug holiday then it might be the right time to detox.

My LLMD is aware I take Milk Thistle and Malarone which is like Mepron. He never told me to stop taking it. I wonder if I should? I know you are not suppose to take CO-Q10 with Mepron or Malarone.

I guess IF it were me, I would ask him, and IF he said YES, I would ask him WHAT HE recommended to protect your Liver.

IF he didn't come up with something GOOD, I would either continue taking it, and maybe add in Red Root tincture, OR I would find another doctor.

I have wondered if the reason some are not getting better after years and years of antibiotics is because of certain supps taken

with antibiotics. I think it would be a good idea to the ones that did not get better with antibiotics to write down what they were taking

while ON antibiotics, and see what others think.

Maybe I am wrong, just some thoughts.

I could very well be off base, but who knows?

I have journalled since being on antibiotics and this has been a HUGE help.

I actually journalled through much of my trying to get well years, and it is nice to look back and see what was going on.

You wonder, would certain herbal supps make the antibiotics less effective? Would any binding agents such as psyllium be interfering in your treatment, the ones that take it.

I have wondered this because I have felt that
some things have made my antibitoics less effective, and when I stopped them, I seemed to get better. What a way to go nuts, it is tough.

Milk thistle, or silymarin (the group of active constituents), is good for protecting the liver.

However,

"Silymarin, as other flavonoids, has been shown to inhibit P-gp-mediated cellular efflux.[citation needed] The modulation of P-gp- activity may result in altered absorption and bioavailability of drugs that are P-gp- substrates. It has been reported that silymarin inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes and an interaction with drugs primarily cleared by P450s cannot be excluded.[citation needed]"

So if you are on drugs that are metabolized by the P450 enzymes, like CYP3a4, etc, than it's probably a bad idea to take silymarin/milk thistle with those drugs.

Silymarin decreases the activity of CYP3A4, and probably other P450 enzymes. That means if you take a drug dependent on CYP3A4, that it will not be excreted as quickly, and will build up a higher plasma level of the drug in your system over time, which can lead to dangerous levels/reactions.

There is a partial list of CYP3A4 inducers, inhibitors and substrates here. Some substrates include: azole antifungals, barbiturates, benzodiazepines (diazepam), codeine, digoxin, macrolide antibiotics, quinine, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (Anti-Depressants), testosterone, tricyclic anti-depressants, venlafaxine, viagra, and the list goes on and on.

Substrates mean that they are dependant on that set of enzymes for their metabolism, and any CYP3A4 inducers, or inhibitors, will either decrease, or increase (respectively) the level of them in your body as time goes on.

However, if you are NOT on any drugs metabolized dependant of the P450 liver enzyme group, than your probably safe off, and might want to use milk thistle/silymarin for it's hepaprotective benefits.

I should add, that a lot of herbs and supplements affect the P450 group, and you should check with them as well.

"..Indiscriminate use of herbal products may lead to altered pharmacokinetics of certain drugs and may result in increased toxicity of certain drugs."(1)

1.
Milk thistle, a herbal supplement, decreases the activity of CYP3A4 and uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase in human hepatocyte cultures.
