Anyone dealing with depression? Not situational, I can tell the difference. I was diagnosed "profoundly depressed", but after 1 1/2 yrs of trying different meds, they found the right "cocktail" mix.

Now it has come back almost full force. Anybody else in a similiar situation? What do you do? I can't deal with this on top of everything else. [Frown]

EWT, are you taking fish oil supplements and magnesium?
These are important for mental health support.

It takes some effort on your part to find good products and remember to take adequate dosages daily.

You can google and find info about this.

EWT,
I was affected with sever depression for about 15 years. This was before i got lyme. I tried all the meds, and none worked for me.

I did however find a book called *potatoes not prozac* and did the food program as described and am no longer depressed. Again, i was seriously depressed, and plagued with panick attacks. Im totally healed.

The author is Kathleen Demaisons, and she has a excellent website at radiantrecovery.com

Some people are what she coined as *sugar sensitive* and her program works if you do exactly as the steps are laid out. It saved my life.

I'm on the yeast diet (yes, it is a problem for me when on abx). No starches, sugars, no flour, NO potatoes. I haven't tried the magnesium (sp), but regular fish oil upsets my stomach. I was thinking about Icelandics' pure fish oil? Do you know anything about it?

It appears that flaxseed oil also contains the EPA fatty acid that is needed for the effect on depression. Google "Flax EPA".

Years ago I became extremely depressed. I took antidepressant medication for about a year and that pulled me out. You should contact your doctor if you aren't getting a handle on it ASAP.

Magnesium is essential for anyone with lyme. It can help a lot with many symptoms, including brain. A few years ago I had a doctor who put me on GABA (an OTC supplement), 750 mg 2X per day. That really helped with my depression and now when I feel myself slipping into it I use GABA and also flower essences. Flower essenses can be remarkably effective if you get the right one but the GABA was amazing for me. I can't say that it will work the same for you but it does work quite well for many people.

That said, as I'm sure you know, severe depression is nothing to fool around with. Please contact your doctor and see if they have anything new to offer you if you feel your depression is getting out of control. Once it gets bad, it's much harder to get under control in my experience.

Wishing you the best,
Terry

My LLND told me to go off of flax seed oil because she said it depresses the immune system similar to cortisone.

Hi,

Nystatin helped my CANDIDA depression.
Really helped me.

I actually got worse before better from the candida toxins. I also had to start off slowly with nystatin.

I use the nilstat hard pink coated tablets, Nilstat is also nystatin.

Also, a good probiotic is needed.

I hope you find somethign that works. I have dealt with depression, and know what it is like.

Take care and good luck,

[Smile]

You need a pharmaceutical grade of fish oil.
I like the Carson's lemon flavored, as I have no problems with burping fishy taste with it.

I think that krill oil is supposed to be very good too.

As for the magnesium, many forms are difficult for the body to absorb through the gut.
Mag glycinate is one that is easier.
You need to read the list of ingredients for this.

Example:
Source Naturals, Ultra-Mag
http://www.iherb.com/store/ProductDetails.aspx?c=Herbs&pid=SNS-00803

The fish oil is an essential fatty acid that helps the cell membranes to form properly.
When the red blood cells are healthy, they can squeeze through the capillaries in single file, so that oxygen can pass from them to the cells.

When the cell membranes of the red cells become too stiff, they can not deform enough to squeeze through the capillaries, and your muscle and brain cells do not get enough oxygen to function.

As you may recall, the lyme bacteria use up so much of the magnesium within our cells that the cells become depleted, and this hinders the enzyme processes that all need magnesium.

Taking fish oil and magnesium supplements will help to reduce inflammation and pain, as well as support mental health function.

Anti-depressants can CAUSE depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. Any rapid change in dosage or drug can also cause severe problems, including suicide.

A book, YOUR DRUG MAY BE YOUR PROBLEM, by Peter Breggin, may be of real help to you. He talks about issues with antidepressants and what to do about them.

Also, B vitamins, especially B1, are used up by any drugs. This can cause serious mood problems as well. When taking B vitamins, also take C, Magnesium, and Calcium for best effect.

Hi EWT,

I suffered from major clinical depression for 15 years. I was even thrown in the loony bin, I mean hospitalized, for it. And the antidepressnats, oh how many I took. And to no avail.

But I accidentally cured my depression. It was the darndest thing.

All I did was a colon cleanse (Dr Schulze). It was the most amazing thing, all of a sudden it was gone. Unfortunately, I still got sick with Lyme, so it wasn't a wonder cure all, but it blew my mind. And it has not come back since.

It was the weirdest thing, a baffling mystery to me, until I started researching and found out that 90 percent of serotonin is produced in the intestinal tract. Then it started making more sense.

I still can't believe that it actually happened, as I read what I write it sounds fantastical and completely unbelievable. I wasn't trying to cure depression, I was just doing a cleanse for health reasons.

I thank my lucky stars I don't have it anymore because I don't know if I could survive Lyme and depression, I honestly don't.

And of course all the doctors asked me if I was depressed when I was trying to get a diagnosis. "Are you SURE you don't have depression?" they would continually ask. And I would say yes I'm sure, I had depression for 15 years and I know exactly what it feels like and this isn't it! Please doctor, explain to me how a chronic sore throat is a symptom of depression!!! Gahh!!

Oops, sorry about the rant. Hee!

I really hope you feel better. Hang in there!

Alison

EWT,

Sorry to hear of your depression returning. I was just in the same boat as you. Luckily mine lifted after 2 weeks this time.

Have you recently switched abx or changed doses? Sometimes that is the culprit for me. I take Paxil CR but at one point I was put on Tetracycline and I had severe depression and anxiety. It was so bad that I had myself hospitalized. I didn't know this at the time but it was most likely a herx.

Be sure to call your doctor. I believe that depression/anxiety is one of the hardest symptoms to deal with. I do hope your feeling better soon.

Hi EWT,

I think it's really important to see your psyc. right away. Depression isn't anything to mess with, and I'm thinking now that you've been treating Lyme, maybe you're going to have to try a different cocktail?

My mother suffers from severe mental illness (all her life - she won't get tested for Lyme), and I have seen her get sick - these meds have to be carefully monitored.

So, I wouldn't do anything without a psych. There are a few Lyme psycs.; Dr. R. in NY is one. Perhaps it would be worth a trip? Please get checked out properly soon.

With best wishes,

CBL.
