need advice on what to do..........yesterday we went fishing and we came home and did a family tick check.... and my 5 year old daughter had one on her back and it latched and we took it out with tweezors... today there is little red raised bump with a white looking place where the bite was... i was thinking ok it's like a mosquito bite it will leave a itchy raised bump but now i'm a little worried she has laid around today and saying she doesn't feel well, we checked her temp. and it is 99.4
i know that is not a fever for a child but she was going to bed and i was thinking to take her to her doc. tomorrow and have them start her on antibiotics to be on the safe side.......
any advice on what to do?????????????
worried, lisa

Did you save the tick???

I would take my child to the pediatrician and start antibiotics.

I would much rather err on the side of caution.

Good luck.

Lisa, I am wondering how you go fishing if you are bed ridden..But perhaps there are ways to do it.

If it were my child, knowing what I now know, I would rush to a Dr and get some antibiotics. Tick borne diseases have ruined my daughter's life so I would not take a chance.

I am not a DR, just a mom in the trenches. Good luck..

Hello mom in KY..

Welcome to LymeNet.

I would take her to the doctors... and take the tick with you if you still have it.

Kentucky.. as with other states.. have other tick borne diseases to be concerned about. I would be especially watchful of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Waiting for a rash is not in the best interest of the patient.. in either disease.. and many with Lyme don't get a rash anyway.. especially children.

Treat first.. and ask questions later for the best outcomes.

Do NOT fall for the "we should do a test"... THEN see if it is positive before treating. The crummy tests miss up to 90 percent of those infected with Lyme disease.

Also... a person's antibodies to Lyme won't even be able to be detected for several weeks after exposure... so don't let them tell you otherwise.

And the garbage about "No Lyme in Kentucky.. or it is "rare" there. If they try that.. your response should be... as you kick them in the knee cap....

That dog don't hunt.

I hope that helps!

Do let us know if you need anything! Good luck!

[Big Grin]

Always save the ticks!

Here is the form, print it out and have the tick tested. Your daughter should go on antibiotics now until you get the tick testing results back. If you threw out the tick, then you will have to get her a full work up for all the co-infections, and keep a good watch on her for any signs & symptoms. Did you not use permethrin on her clothes? Do tick checks every hour or more whenever possible! Take a picture of the raised bump, and note the fever...and get her to the doctor ASAP and on antibiotics.

And if the test comes back negative on the tick...continue to treat until the meds are all gone.

I got bit again 2 yrs ago and started on abx. Then the test came back negative on the tick.
Well, by that time I was having symptoms and knew the tick had given me SOMETHING.

I continued my treatment until I was feeling OK again....about 6 wks.

Testing is SOOOO lousy these days!

Please read my long response under General Support.
Didn't see this until after I had responded.

I agree - treatment is my recommendation, too.
