Here's an update to the thread "No Lyme in FL" from a couple of days ago, which linked an article printed in the Gainesville Sun saying there was no Lyme in FL.
My husband and I wrote a letter to the editor which was published. Yeah! I kept the letter short and I kept it factual. (I restrained my desire to scream and rant...save that for later!)
We're years behind other states in awareness that ticks in FL carry Bb. The state DOH has not been active in surveying tick populations and the few studies done are buried in journals, or as one researcher told me, not published for political reasons.

Nancy,
I'm glad you were able to get your article published. I find it so sad that when talking to so many people in other states, they are quick to tell me that they don't have lyme in "THEIR" state.
Awareness is a good thing and I just wanted to say you did a good job in hopefully bringing awareness in Florida as well. Bravo!!!

Nancy- Thank you!!!! Even my 10 year old daughter laughed when I just showed her your article. We are all lyme survivors in our home and undergoing treatment (in NJ though) but yes...we live in Central Florida. My daughter and I are chronic and husband and son are early. My son was in remission since an infant when he received IV treatment at 7 weeks...and 2 years ago we found a bullseye on his wrist, yes, here in Clermont, FL!
Keep up the great work ; ) Families like mine appreciate what you have done for us all. Tina -mom2zoecon

Wow! They actually put it on there. Good. I haven't traveled much in life, so... You know how Florida has a lot of bugs(ticks, mosquitos,...) and we don't wear much clothing.

Cathy, Tina and Kendrick, thanks for the replies - sorry to hear of all of your struggles. Hopefully, over time things will change - quicker diagnosis and better treatment - so that so many will not have to suffer. Tina, it's especially hard to see our kids having such a hard time .
thanks again, Nancy

I think the denial is because tourism is the number one business in our state. They are afraid the folks up north won't bring their families to Disney World if they think they might get bitten by ticks.
A few years ago, we had a tick epidemic in my neighborhood that was so bad some neighbors had them crawling on their clothes in their closets, and we had to have our lawn sprayed twice. This happened in the most densely populated county in Florida too, not out in the country!
