Hi,

I've been on IV Azithromycin and oral Rifampin for almost 2 months. Since starting the azithromycin I've always had occasional issues with ear ringing. However, the last few days I've noticed that it has increased dramatically and is now not merely an ear ringing but more like a 'ringing in my head' which interferes with going to sleep. In addition I've noticed a dramitic increase in anxiety - could be I'm nervous about the head ringing or a separate issue all together. It is quite concerning so I've contacted my doctor but in the meantime wonder if anyone here has had this? I wonder if this means I have to go off the medication and will it go away if I go off? I've done well on the IV zith so would like to stay on it.

HI Nicolette,
I have the same symptoms on Zithro. I've been on it now orally for about a month. About a week after I started I noticed a ringing, but

not so much from the ears in sounds more like it is in the head. It also is more of a buzzing. I thought it was my symptoms getting worse from

starting the Zithro, but after reading on here it maybe the abx. It is also annoying when I go

to bed, but during the day I do not hear it. I too have had good progress with this abx and

hate to change. My doctor won't do ketek, which is the the same class as Zithro. Maybe there is something else comparable to Zithro.

As far as the nervous stuff goes I was nervous before starting abx. I was actually was going

to post on that before seeing your post. Maybe the Zithro is adding to my nervosness! I hope not this symptom drives me nuts.

Zith usually cases this situation.

As for the "nerves on edge" or as I describe it.. feeling like I am jittery and having an "almost allergic reaction"... I use Querectin.

However ALWAYS check with your doctor when stuff comes up that you are concerned about... especially concerning a possible allergic reaction.

Also contact your doctor about the ears ringing.. especially if it has increased. They need to know.

I am NOT a doctor.. but I once played a banjo.

Zithromax is known to cause that ringing in the ears. If it is severe, you may have to temporarily lower your dose for a few days. I used to listen to my CD's when I did my IV and after because of the annoying ringing. I had to drop my IV Zithromax dose a few times from 1,000 mg to 500 mg, and then I did fine with that dose.
let your LLMD know, they may drop the dose for a few days.

I have been on the IV Zithro for about 1 1/2 weeks now (was on oral for 5 months prior) and I am having some worse anxiety issues. I will sometimes have to take a Xanax just to get through the infusion of the dose. I mentioned it to my doctor and he said he hadn't heard of that before as a side effect and wondered if my blood sugar was off - but I told him I have had plenty of anxiety and that is what it was! I have been herxing lately and I know that might also be part of it. Praying that it is all worth it and the Lyme is dying!!!!
