Plum Island Laboratory interim director Dr. Lawrence Barrett will now permanently run the federal animal disease-testing center. Barrett, a veterinarian, was named to the two-year terms on Wednesday.
A year ago the Department of Homeland Security said the lab was going to be rebuilt and relocated as a new and improved national agricultural defense research center.
This new lab will work with killing dangerous germs like anthrax and botulism. Last year the government invested 35 million dollars to increase its security. Many states have shown interest in building this research center.
Four years ago Congress drew attention to the aging facility and it was the subject of a thorough report by federal investigators. The lab came under scrutiny after reports of dead owls and cases of Lyme disease had raised safety concerns.
These cases were a driving force in Congress's investigation as well as the plans to eventually rebuild the new national agricultural defense research center.
note: If you haven't read LAB 257....READ IT! nan

Close enough so that Wormser can hop right over. Anyone know how far the Weschester Hospital is from Plum? Remember in "Silence of the Lambs" where Hannibal Lecter was offered a vacation on Plum in exhange for his co-operation? That still makes me laugh. The kinda guy they love having around.

Not hard to understand the mystery illness that occurred in Lyme CT....just a short boat ride away.
Migrating birds used Plum Island as a stop on their migration route. Probably why cases of lyme rose sharply in the northeast, especially on the coast and on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
I'm glad I don't live in the city of Boston where Klempner will be experimenting with very dangerous bugs.
Don't understand how they could place a level 4 lab smack in the middle of a city.
Greatcod: You made me laugh out loud with your Hannibal Lechter story!

I do not think our government cares if any of these diseased ticks escape off pleasant Plum island or anywhere else. I think that is the point of what they are up to.
I bet that lovely African tick will me over here in no time at all.
I have no crystal ball to use to make these preticktions but I am just in a ticked off mood today dealing with it all.

I read the book last summer. When you do read the book it actualy makes sence why they don't want to have as many cases of Lyme Disease reported. Because the government doesn't want to take responsibility for engineering the disease or spreading it.
