Recently before breakfast, I was sitting at a desk writing when I fainted without warning, was unconscious for at least half an hour, felt terrible afterwards--pretty much out of it, so I went back to bed. My husband tells me that my face looked very gray.

I got a fever that went up to 101.5, and my husband took me to the ER in the afternoon, as the fever wasn't coming down. When I got to the ER, I had a low pulse-oxygen, so I was put on supplimental oxygen. I was admitted to the hospital for an overnight stay. I slept most of the time.

I felt pretty much OK the next day, with no fever, but an out-of-balance feeling that I get quite a bit. My pulse-oxygen was OK, but not great (91%), and I was discharged from the hospital.

I got an MRI, as one doctor thought I might have had a blood clot in the brain. This didn't show up on the MRI.

WHAT IS THIS??!!?? What tests should I get done to find out??

Thanks for helping!

Wow. No other symptoms?? No evidence of a virus or something??

I'm sorry this knocked you down and out. Do you have babesia???

Could it be your monthly herx??

Wow Cass,

I would think it is some kind of infection if you got a fever like that. Do you have a PICC line or central line? if so, it may be infected, because I passed out like that when I got sepsis. If not, could be any infection, how did your bloodwork look?

How scary!!!

Blood clots in the brain usually (but not always) create some type of symptom like slurred speech,

Paralysis, Bell's Palsy, Massive Headache, etc.

I am not a doctor, but a Speech Pathologist who has worked with many, many stroke patients.

I only know of one stroke patient that had fever...

She had contracted meningitis which caused a stroke.

The fever was actually from the infection.

Did they do your MRI with and without contrast??

I think a result (seeing something like a clot) is more discernable when both techniques are used.

I pray and hope that you are doing better.

Could your pressure have dropped?

Could you be having an allergic reaction to one of your meds?

I am praying for you.

Hugs,

Geneal

Thanks for responding. Here's my answers to your questions--I'm still looking for answers to this mystery--or how to find answers--so help is needed!!

I don't know if I have babesia. My test from Bowen Research in Florida said no, but I was tick-bitten on the West Coast. The only babesia symptoms I have are an out-of-balance feeling sometimes and sometimes my body briefly heats up and cools down for no apparent reason, but not to the level of a fever and chills. I had ascribed the temperature changes to menopause, but don't know what test would be able to tell if that's the real culprit.

When I took Artemisinin for about a month (just in case) I got the best resurgence toward normal that I've had in a long time. I'm not sure how I would get a certainty on whether I have babesia or not.

Could babesia cause that level of unconsiousness?? Or, would that be the fever part after?

I don't have a monthly herx as far as I can tell.

I don't have a PCC line in, so no infection from an external source. My blood work in the hospital seemed fine to them.

Since then, I have had some difficulty finding a word for something I want to say--I was having this trouble with Lyme, it seemed to have gotten better, and then suddenly worse. No headache, paralysis, or Bell's palsy.

My MRI was done with and without contrast. Some scattered, very tiny areas of "dead brain" showed up--called "punctilate" in the report--which were speculated to be from very small localized blood blockages, which probably occurred over time and which were not new.

It could have been a blood pressure drop, but then the question becomes WHY? and what test would I have done to find out what's happening?? This was extremely sudden and unusual!!

As for an allergy, I had started stephania root about 48 hours before this happened (at one capsule 3 times a day). As that was the last thing that changed, I have dropped it.

Would passing out and having a fever be an allergic reaction?

I'm still looking for answers on this one!!

Thanks for your prayers--I am doing better, but desperately need to find out why this happened so whatever caused it can be fixed!!

Best,

Cass A

In my understanding, a sudden loss of consciousness may be due to cardiac problems.

If the heart does not keep pumping an adequate amount of blood to the brain, the person faints.

There is also the problem of sudden drop of blood pressure, which would result in a decrease of blood flow to the brain.

Mmmm....orthostatic hypotension, I think?
This can happen when your posture changes, as when one rises quickly from a reclining position.

This may be due to dysautonia, an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system.

I don't know enough to figure out how the elevated temperature would figure into the equation.

But it seems to me that in a case like this, the docs usually look for a heart problem.

Heh, and I could be all wet.

Do you still have fever???

Did they look for any signs of meningitis?

Encephalitis?

Slurred speech may be a sign of a clot, but it would be highly unusual for this to be the only sign.

Not impossible, but unusual.

I sure wish I knew....this sure has me stumped.

Search POTs and NMH here online. There is a great

deal of info on pressure issues and testing for it.

Geneal

Have you been tested for Babesia WA-1 strain?

I had ascribed the temperature changes to menopause, but don't know what test would be able to tell if that's the real culprit.

Blood tests can measure estrogen & other hormone levels.

It could have been a blood pressure drop, but then the question becomes WHY?

Lyme can affect the nervous system and mess up signals that balance heart rate blood pressure.

and what test would I have done to find out what's happening??

Title Table Test. Mine was done through the cardiac center with UCSD medical center in San Diego. It showed I had Neurally Mediated Hypotension (NMH).

I had started stephania root about 48 hours before this happened (at one capsule 3 times a day). As that was the last thing that changed, I have dropped it.

A Google search mentions stephania root can cause both a drop in blood pressure and have diaretic (loss of body water/fluids) affect. Both which could lead to dropped blood pressure/weakness and a chance for fainting/passing out.

I'm still looking for answers on this one!!

Have you been able to get a hold of your LLMD yet about this symptom? Or your regular physician? Probably best to run it by them in addition to asking here.

Sorry you're having to deal with this stuff [Frown]

Hope some answers can be found!

For years after they thought I had lupus which went away with abx and PRE my tick bite and Lyme outbreak, I had this weird thing happen every month that I wonder about- 48-72 hours pre-period I would spike a high temp and pass out
and it would be gone within 10 minutes. My period at this time was less than a teaspoon each month. I don't know. I wonder about it!
I think I had Lyme with the "lupus" and that it was dormant and that for some reason the hormone fluctuation at that time of the month made it happen. but I would get dizzy-

that is how I knew it was coming- then would spike a high fever- pass out-

come to-
and fever would be gone, would be nothing but dizzy agian 10 minutes later-

happened for years- at this one rehab where I worked I would just call out, 'it's happening!" and all my co-workers would rush to watch it happen. they found it interesting to watch me pass out & come to*)! After getting dizzy I would RUN to The Couch in the staff room so I would pass out safely and not hit my head-

It was scary though-

docs never found anything-
