Thank you all for your suggestions.
We have been successfully getting our son to verrrry slowly take his medicine by licking a little bit off a spoon and then washing it down with a drink.
We also tell him he can't go play outside or on the computer until he licks it all up!
It's working! Yea!
And happily, all the symptoms he was complaining about seem to have disappeared (for now)!
