I just got my port placed this morning and I have terrible shoulder pain. The place where the port is (on my chest) doesn't really hurt, but I can't lift my arm at all and my shoulder is killing me. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Having had a port once upon a time myself, I would not call this normal. Check with your doctor. Nothing is worse than an infected port or incorrectly fitted port or a port to which you have an allergic reaction.

Please have it checked.

I'm not a dr., but this doesn't sound normal to me. Please contact your dr. about this ASAP.

Pain is your body's signal that something is wrong.

Don't let them tell you "it just needs time to heal" or other baloney. The drs. needs to take a look at it.

I've had several surgeries and enough complications to know that if something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't--no matter what the dr. or nurse says.

You may need to be determined or even get a second opinion. Sometimes it helps to have someone from a different field of medicine notice something is wrong. Their words often carry more weight than the patient's.

Thanks so much for all your help. I just got out of the hospital yesterday, they admitted me because of my pain. They treated me like sh*$! They couldn't find anything wrong with the port so they released me basically saying that I was "hypersensitive to pain".

I've had many surgeries before and IVE NEVER had this much pain from such a simple proceedure. I swear, I will never got the ER again unless I'm dying. They treated me like a drug addict and a baby I begged to be released early and they finally let me go.

My PCP said that when you already have an underlying condition and then get surgery you never know what can happen. I know this sounds crazy, but I almost feel like I should have never gone. They beat you up mentally in there.

The worst part is I have a long history of ER visits prior to being DXed with LD (chest pain, feeling like my head was going to explode, fever swollen lymph nodes, pelvic pain, the list goes on) and they look at that long history and think I'm a hypochondriac, it's really hurtful.

Anyways, thanks everyone for all your help :-)

Love,

Dizzy

unfortunately any keets in the area maybe dancing due to the surgery!

You had surgery in the vessle that include blood circulation to your shoulder and the keet may have gotten shaken up.

When I had my first Port put in I had some pretty bad pains too. I was very ill back then too.

Remember, you are healing. And, your body is working and the pain is a sign, though uncomfortable that you need to take it easy.

Maybe try the heating pad on the back of your shoulder and across your neck, while you ice the front of your port.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, put lemon in it for detox if you like, and have some green tea.

I hope you can rest and heal and things get better soon! [Smile]

Thanks achey!

I was thinking the same thing about the Lyme and I suppose when you have surgery esp around muscles etc it forces them to move (spirochetes). They put me on antibiotics in the hospital and I was spiking a fever on the 2nd day and also last night I was 101.00 at home after they released me.

I feel MUCH better than I did ( I couln't even shrug my shoulder or lift my arm without the whole arm shaking from the pain).

I can type today and atleast exercise my arm a little, but I'm gonna rest as much as possible!

Thanks again!
