I've read on a couple of posts about people having trouble walking. Me too.

I generally walk very slowly and with a limp.

When I have a "flare up" it gets much worse, with my feet and knees during in and my body rocking from side-to-side (looks like CP)

On my worst occasion, had to crawl b/c couldn't walk at all.

Is this "common?"

First, I'm sorry you're having this. I don't know if it's common, but I can empathize.

Being unable to walk was actually my first big Lyme symptom. When I'd walk, my right foot would go completely numb, and then the pain in my hip would become excruciating.

I was misdiagnosed for two years by a variety of docs, including podiatrists and sports docs. Lyme turned out to be the culprit for everything.

By the time I was dx, I was barely able to walk, shuffling, in a lot of pain and limping badly.

I've been on abx now for two years. Thanks to treatment (abx and acupuncture), I'm now able to walk about a mile without too many problems. Occasionally my foot does go numb, but I can sometimes do some standing exercises and restore feeling.

I hope you're able to find some relief!

Andie

I know this all too well.

I have had Lyme and co infections for at least 12 years (I am 20).
My mother once noted that I often walked like an 80 year old woman. I had never even noticed.
My joints were hurting so bad I could not walk like a healthy 13 year old.

This got much worse when I went to college, and once had to have my boyfriend help me to the bathroom for I was unable to make it there by myself. This was when I threw a fit and really started fighting with the doctors for some help. A 18 year old girl should not have to ask for help to the bathroom. She should not have to ask for help from her friends to get her to the car.

2 years of fighting and I finally got a diagnosis!

This is one of the hard to deal with symptoms. Children stare and point... makes you feel a little odd.

You just have to keep moving! Unless there is actual joint or other damage being done when you walk, just keep walking! You can deturmin if there is underlying damage by going to a joint doctor (I was told I had arthitis my whole life by them... but that is how I found out my pain had no physical cause related to the joint!) Dont ever stop walking. So many people stop, and then really go down hill.
My pain is neurological joint pain, plus I have muscle stiffness.

I really hope this symptom gets better for you! and again! Keep moving! If it is neurological, keep moving!

I'm probably sleeping...

Looking back, this was my first obvious symptom of Lyme's- 15 years ago!

I am very happy to hear that people have gotten past this.

Yes, I will try to keep walking. I have to admit, that I had to get one of those motorized shopping carts at cost-co one day-very embarrasing!

I struggle with finding a balance of keep on moving to help and moving too much so that I wind up wiped out for days....

I deterioratet quite rapidly last year, not being able to walk any distances. After 5 months on abx I was finally able to walk for a mile or so, increasing the distance every week. Now, after changing abx, I have regressed some.

On my worst days, when herxing, I sometimes can't walk further than from my bed to the couch. A couple of weeks ago, when getting up in the middle of the night, my knees went in every direction! I had to grab hold of the doorframe and walls not to fall.

Some days there's "a spring in my steps", other days I am stiff as a tree-trunk hobbling along. But it has improved though, after months of abx.

Hopefully you will get back to walking normally too.

cheers, sigrid

At this point I am more frustrated than scared myself.

Couldn't go to my son's party at school today. Missed work -again- and one of my student's graduation.

What I don't get is how it comes and goes? Couldn't really move this am but after a 3 and 1/2 hour nap and moving "faster" than this am.

Does anyone else have this ebb and flow of symptoms?

Oh, yes, dmbfan, I've had trouble walking almost from the beginning of infection.

I was bitten on the abdomen and it affected my hips.

Before long-term antibiotics I could never walk, but now I walk most of the time but always with a limp.

Yesterday I worked hard cleaning up my house. I walked up and down the stairs numerous times.

Later I went to the hospital to see my nephew who, ironically enough, has been admitted because he has joint pain and can't bear weight (aka - he's not able to walk). I walked quite a ways to see him, and I'm praying it's not Lyme for him, too.

Today - I have been unable to get out of my chair so I've been sitting here at Lymenet for about 6 hours. I'm waiting for my husband to come home to rescue me!

In my experience, the walking has definitely been ebb and flow, but I always have a limp, no matter what.

I, too, have to use the riding carts when shopping sometimes, and boy, do I get some looks from people wondering why a young person needs to ride around!

Keep on keeping on! [Smile]
