I was getting a massage a few months ago, and the therapist kind of pulled on my ears a bit...I noticed that they made a crakling noise.

I don't know if anyone else can hear it, like when you crack your knuckles, and I can't tell if it's the cartilage or inside my ear... but now everytime I pull my ears it happens....

and I also notice that in the back of my ear, at the base, it's tender. I forgot to bring it up to LLMD, but he did look in my ears, and I would assume if there was an infection he would have said so.

does anyone else have this problem?

Look up info about Relapsing Polychondritis.

It's an autoimmune thing, that attacks cartilage.

They don't know what causes it, but I suspect that Lyme Disease triggers autoimmune problems.

Sometimes my ears do this crackly thing too! Carol, do you think Lyme can cause AED? I think that's what it's called--autoimmune ear dysfunction.

Hi Jaime,

In my opinion Lyme definitely does cause this. My ear became crackly and brittle when I was really sick. With treatment it got better. The treatment needs to penetrate the ear cartilage and blood vessels, though. One of the people I work on with Lyme now has an ear that cracks and pops like a knuckle when I work on it. We can both hear it. I think it is a sign of the bacteria's presence in the cartilage.
